College life is crazy expensive, especially in Boston. From going out to all the classy restaurants and bars, to giving into the constant temptations of venturing into the trendy stores we walk by every day. So how do we keep up with this lifestyle before going completely broke? Well, this is the time to listen to that advice your mothers always gave you: Get a job! With so many places to work in this big city, and even just around our campus, its more than likely that you can find a part time job somewhere!
Now you can groan. Go for it, the “uuggghhhh, I don’t want to get a job…” reaction is something everyone goes through.
“It takes up too much time!”
“I’m way too busy with school work.”
“I want to be able to go out on weekends!”
All likely excuses going through your head right now. And as a student working a retail job, you can take my word. I felt the same way at first, and still do at times. It does get to be a lot; balancing work, school, and a social life can be tough! But here’s the trick, think of it in a positive light!
- You get to meet tons of new people! Working with people is a whole different dynamic than going to school with people. You develop a different type of relationship with the people you work with, and oftentimes it is even a closer relationship than with the girl who you sit quietly next to everyday in your English class. At a job you have to communicate and work together all the time. With so many universities in Boston it is likely that you’ll be working with people from other schools, and therefore even expanding your social network!
- You’ll have money to spend on YOURSELF. Come on, you deserve to be able to spend some money for you! For most girls, a simple shopping trip is a stress reliever. And throughout the semester we always need those study breaks. With even just a part time job, you’ll have that extra cash that you always seem to need to buy that dress you keep eyeing in the window of your favorite store. And if you work enough, you will even have the ability to splurge on that one item that’s always been out of your price range, but you just need!
- In a city like Boston there are great co-op opportunities to gain experience in your field and get paid. Suffolk offers a great Career Services Office, where you can go to seek out these types of jobs. Not only is this a resume booster and experience builder, but that extra cash flow is a reward in itself!
- It keeps you busy when you’re bored. At one point or another you’re going to find yourself bored with nothing to do besides sit in your dorm, eat, and watch TV. This is just unhealthy! So get off that lazy butt and be productive on days like this, just so you keep your sanity if nothing else!
