The Smart Collegiette’s Guide to Clear Skin!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Mass Amherst chapter.

Obtaining and maintaining clear skin is a challenge for many of us. College can be hectic with classes, work, and the crazy weekends. Sometimes our skin takes a toll from the constant mayhem. Life is stressful enough without having to worry about zits, so follow these easy tips to keep your complexion blemish-free!

1.) Drink plenty of water. Easy, right? Yet with our busy schedules, we forget to keep up with our H2o. Water helps to detoxify
our bodies as well as our skin, getting rid of the toxins that can lead to acne (a.k.a. Public Enemy #1). Drink around 8 glasses a day to see major improvements. I know it sounds like a lot but it’ll be worth it.

2.) Make sure you remove your make-up before going to bed. Even if you’re exhausted and you’ve just had the longest day, this rule should not be broken if you are serious about clear skin. If you’re prone to breakouts, buy make-up that has “non-comedogenic” in the label. And while you’re at it, make sure to clean your make-up brushes once a week to prevent germs from spreading.

3.)
Got an extremely red zit that appeared out of nowhere? Instead of trying to cover it up with concealer (which could make it worse in the long run by clogging your pores), try dabbing a bit of Visine on the blemish to get rid of the redness and dab it with a clear emergency spot treatment like Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment ($12.00).

4.) If you have sensitive skin, use gentle products that won’t cause irritation. Try using products like
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser ($12.00). It’s sold in most convenience stores and it’s super gentle. Also, use alcohol-free toners, which are less harsh on your skin. Don’t be discouraged if you haven’t found the right product yet!

5.) Don’t over-do it. I know it can be frustrating when you aren’t getting the results you want but try to be patient. Don’t wash your face more than 2 to 3 times daily (three only if absolutely necessary like after working out) or you’ll risk drying it out and making your blemishes red and angry. Also keep exfoliating to once a week, any more can potentially cause scarring.

6.) After washing your face, make sure to pat your face dry instead of rubbing! Rubbing causes irritation and can contribute to wrinkles.

7.) Change your pillowcase often and tie your hair up while you sleep to avoid the oils from your hair getting on your face.
Changing your pillowcase once a week can help you keep your skin clear and clean.

8.) If all else fails, talk to a dermatologist. They can help you find a customized skin care routine that is suitable with your skin type.

Clear skin is possible if you work for it! It’s a long and rough road but the results will be completely worth the effort. Good luck, gals!
