Dress For Success: Rock That Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Job interviews. Whether you love them or hate them, you need to learn to embrace them because they are here to stay. Although you might not be able to control exactly what happens during the interview, you do have complete control of the first impression, which could possibly be the most important aspect of the entire experience. Most of that first impression is nonverbal and includes your clothes as well as your accessories, makeup and hair. Easy, right? Not exactly. Many people don’t realize how important it is to look presentable and polished for the interview. Because the outfit is the first thing that interviewers see, they will make judgments based on it even before they start talking to you. Your style says a lot about who you are as a person. I know it sounds scary, but a few simple steps will help you create the perfect outfit.

The first thing to take into account when selecting a look is the position you are interviewing for. If you want this job, you need to take your dress just as seriously as the interview itself. Help yourself out and do research! It might sound trivial, but it is the smartest way to figure out a company’s flair. Check out its website; it could have a page explaining what the company stands for and what they want to see in interviewees. Look at what vibe the company has – laid-back or very business-y? For example, you would probably wear a trendier outfit for an interview at a fashion magazine and a more conservative one for an accounting firm. But just always remember to keep it classy!

Next ask around. If you know anyone who works for or has worked for the company, ask them what you should wear. They would be more than happy to give you advice. The more background information you can get, the better.

Along with deciding what you are going to wear, take into account your hair and makeup. They could prove to be as important as the outfit. This is definitely a time when less is more. There is no need for fancy updos or wild eye makeup. Save those for a night out! Forget about huge, chunky accessories, unless that is the company’s style. You don’t want to distract an interviewer from the main show – you! The less attention you draw to yourself, the more they will focus on your great qualities and experiences. Check out CollegeFashion.net for some great outfit picks for any job interview (like this awesome outfit from them above)!

The absolute most important part of your interview that you must not forget about is your smile. You are never fully dressed without one! Smile and enjoy the interview. Be yourself, and everything else will fall into place.
