You Pledged A Sorority – Now What?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

You survived sorority recruitment! After all those endless open houses, cheesy skits and house tours, you’ve finally got the bid. Now you can sit back in your new letters and relax, right? I hate to break it to you, newly Greek collegiettes, but it’s not that simple. Recruitment was just the start of your new life as a sorority girl. So now that you’ve accepted your bid, what comes next?

Keep Your Schedule Open
Greek life is a HUGE time commitment, and in most cases will pick up soon after bid day. Homecoming preparations, socials, service outings, new member education classes and numerous other events will start piling up, so don’t overbook yourself with tons of other obligations. I’m not saying that your sorority is the only thing you can ever be involved with, but for now, try not to take on too much. You can start adding other activities once you’ve gotten the hang of being Greek. Finding the right balance of sorority life, classes and other campus clubs is difficult and can take some time. Don’t stress yourself out this early in the semester with too much!

Keep An Open Mind
Before starting rush you probably had your own ideas about what Greek life would be like. However, stereotypes and TV shows don’t provide an accurate picture of what it’s like to be in a sorority. Each chapter is different and will offer you new experiences and unique opportunities, so it’s best to not let your own preconceptions get in the way.

Don’t Get Carried Away
It’s inevitable that at some point you’ll be exposed to the college party scene and all that comes with it. You’ll find that some girls party, some don’t, and some party hard. It’s best not to fall into the last category, especially this early in the game. Don’t feel like you have to go out every night to “bond with the other girls” or “get the full college experience.” It’s ok to go out and have fun, but not if your grades, health or safety are at risk.

It’s OK To Have Friends Outside Of Your Sorority
Being Greek doesn’t mean you have to leave everyone else behind! You can still be friends with girls in your rush group who joined other chapters and girls who didn’t rush at all. Campus is full of diverse and interesting people, and being Greek is no reason to miss out on new friendships.

Have fun!
You probably heard it a million times during recruitment, but it’s true: going Greek is one of the best decisions thousands of girls have made. Sorority life provides so many opportunities, friendships and lasting memories that you won’t find anywhere else, so enjoy it!
