What to Wear (and Not Wear) on a First Date

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

You’ve finally landed a date with that guy you’ve had your eye on, except now you’re staring at a closet filled with clothes and have no idea what to wear. You want to find that perfect outfit that will not only capture his attention, but also hold it for the rest of the night. As we all know, guys are extremely visual so making a good first impression is crucial. To make your date’s jaw drop (in a good way, of course), it’s important to look at a few fashion do’s and don’ts when it comes to deciding what to wear for your very first date.

The Don’ts

Makeup Overload

Avoid wearing too much makeup. Guys want to see your natural face, not the face you’ve painted on. Too much makeup may also reveal to your date that you’re insecure and trying to hide behind caked-on makeup.

Ugg Boots

Yes, many of us live in the cozy, warm, softness that glorifies Uggs. But unfortunately, most guys don’t find them appealing. In fact, most find them to be the exact opposite. So, your best bet is to keep them at home. Instead swap the uggs for a pair of dressier boots.

Say ‘No’ To Sleazy

Mini skirts, extremely low-cut shirts, and dresses so tight they suffocate your body are also major don’t’s for a first date. Unless you want your date to get the impression you are just looking for a ‘good time’, leave those at home too.

The DO’s

Dress the Part

Where you’re going and what you’re doing on your date should be the starting point for what to wear on your date. If you’re catching a sports game, go for a pair of jeans and a cute t-shirt. And if you’re going to a classy restaurant opt for a skirt or dress and comfortable heels.

Subtle Sexy

Knowing how to look subtly sexy is a good skill to have when dressing for a date. It’s important when wearing a skirt or a dress to make sure it’s not too short or tight. A shirt or sweater that hangs off the shoulders paired with dark wash jeans and peep toe heels is a great outfit choice to look sexy (while leaving a little to the imagination) .

LBD (Little Black Dress)

If you’re going to a nice restaurant or another classy venue, a little black dress is never a bad idea. You can dress it up or down with the right accessories and add splashes of color to brighten your overall look.

Be confident

To look comfortable in your own skin opt for clothes that suit your style. Wear clothing similar to your everyday wardrobe and that accentuate your personality. You want to dress to impress but not stray away from who you are. It can look awkward if you try to represent yourself as somebody you’re not. And if there’s any one thing you should absolutely wear on a date, it’s confidence and a smile. Sounds cheesy, but believe me your date will be focused on you all night.
