All Boys School? Count Me In!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

About thirty minutes or so down another country road leaving Purdue’s campus, you’ll find yourself in the little town of Crawfordsville, Indiana. It is not the most exciting place, nor does it have the best reputation as a town in the state…

However, there is good to be found in every ‘bad’ place: just around nine hundred male students fill the halls of Wabash College, located in the middle of the small town. Although a very prestigious college for young men, the school seems to be astonishingly over-looked by the eyes of girls who attend the D1 and D2 surrounding colleges.

I feel fortunate to say that I have met the Little Giants and enjoy myself every time I visit Wabash.  Just a few weekends ago, I attended one their home football games for the first time. The tailgate was small, yes, but it was comfortable, homey, and enjoyable, too. Instead of watching drunken students at my school try to remember where they or their friends are, I watched these boys share a beer and laughs with their parents, friends, and fraternity brothers.

Everyone at Wabash knows everyone. It is like high school in size, yet college in demeanor. Instead of having to sit way up in a colossal sized stadium, I was able to sit at the forty-yard line on the first row of the stands (after being amazed at the free admission sign, of course).

What really made me appreciate attending the event was watching the Wabash Sphinx Club cheer the team on and keep the crowd pumped. These boys, dressed in the fire engine red and white striped overalls of their mascot, never let silence sit with the fans. They were truly proud of their school and were able to express that from the sideline—a really cool experience for true football fanatics.

I cannot say that I am sad more girls do not attend Wabash events or come to the school to hang out more often. I feel as though the times I have had there are my best kept secrets. I will continue to advocate the school because I always have such a great time there and it is such a good getaway from the stresses of your own college life.

I mean, let us be honest. What girl would not enjoy a swarm of boys dying for your attention? Go to Wabash, get the confidence boost of a lifetime.
