It was just three weeks ago when Hurricane Sandy made her way up the East coast and left New London and surrounding areas in different and somewhat stressful states. Though Governor Malloy of Connecticut set orders of preparation and warning, not many people were ready to endure 620,000 power outages, some of which lasted for days. Some of the highest gusts were recorded in Madison, just 40 minutes from New London, at 85 mph. The people residing closest to Long Island Sound experienced the most damage, with sand storms, major flooding, and damage of water front property.
This is not an event to be forgotten about, considering housing issues and potential water pollution. We need to realize that we were very lucky with the small amount of damage that our school endured. Conn College is playing their part in Sandy relief by setting up donation centers for clothing and other necessities. You may find a box in your dorm for non-perishable food, and feel free to drop off gently used jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, and blankets at the Health Center. Next time you are food shopping, pick up an extra box of pasta or some soup cans. And if you are headed home for Thanksgiving, ask your family and friends if they would be willing to donate warm clothing for a good cause.
