Cortney Matthaey:Bringing light to Seaside Heights

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IUP chapter.

A little over a month ago the trending topic amongst IUP students was a possible day off of class due to the expected dangerous effects of hurricane Sandy. Luckily Indiana County received a week’s worth of harmless thunderstorms. Meanwhile people in our neighboring state of New Jersey saw a very different reality. Boardwalks came crashing down, homes were lost, and a legacy of family fun, laughter, and much more were destroyed. But one IUP student plans to do what she can to help the” restore the shore” relief effort.

Cortney Matthaey is a sophomore Pre-Law student here at IUP, with an upbeat personality and bright smile. She is a native of Seaside Heights, New Jersey. She and her family, like so many others, lost their home to Hurricane Sandy.  Luckily her Matthaey’s parents were visiting IUP for family weekend, and were able to avoid the storm. However her beloved pets were not so lucky.

“My biggest fear was going home for break and having to come face to face with the devastation, and know myself and many of my friends didn’t have a home to go to for the holiday” Matthaey said.

Instead of letting her misfortunes with Hurricane Sandy hold her back, Matthaey has stepped up in her community as a young leader by volunteering. She has plans to step up efforts on campus as well.

Matthaey is coordinating a fun and exciting fundraiser and awareness event.  The event will be a boardwalk themed fundraiser where students will be able to relive and experience some famous boardwalk themed food and games while helping to raise money for Hurricane Sandy victims. The event is scheduled to take place next semester on IUP’s campus. Meanwhile Matthaey is still looking for more volunteers to help her run the event successfully and to spread the word.
