Haverford’s Cookie Queen: Maggie Perkoff ’15

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Haverford chapter.

Meet Haverford’s Cookie Queen! Maggie Perkoff is baking up a storm on campus for an excellent cause…

Name: Maggie Perkoff

Hometown: Millburn, NJ

Year: 2015

Major: Double Major in Computer Science and Linguistics

On campus activities:

Lacrosse, Counterpoint A Cappella, Co-Head of the Women in Science Mentorship Program

We’ve heard you’re a cookie queen of sorts… tell us about your baking endeavors…

I started baking with my mom when I was about 6; she is the one who taught me how to bake.  Four years ago I decided to send cookie care packages out to all of my friends, who were at camp for the summer, a tradition I continued for the next summer as well.  Then two years ago it became mailing cookies to random people at Haverford so I could get to know people at school.  This past summer I realized that with the number of people interested in them by charging just a few dollars that I could raise a significant amount of money for charity.

How did you first get involved with this cause?

The first few times I did this fundraiser the charities were the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and Children’s Specialized Hospital.  I’ve been living with Crohn’s for just over a year now and it meant a lot for me to be able to contribute something to the research efforts. Children’s Specialized Hospital is one of the best providers of children’s healthcare in the country and I have been volunteering there since my sophomore year of high school. Additionally, in the fall Cory Walts asked me to bake cookies to raise money for ALS research in conjunction with the efforts of the Joe Schwartz ’83 Memorial Run/Walk.

What is your favorite type of cookie?

Italian Butter Cookies (the ones dipped in chocolate with sprinkles and jam in the middle)

Reality television is huge right now…if you could be on a popular baking TV show/competition which one would it be?

I would love to be on Cupcake Wars and meet the sisters from DC Cupcakes…. I actually prefer baking cupcakes to cookies, but they are a lot harder to make by the hundreds…

When is the next time we’ll be able to get our hands on your cookies?

Cookies will definitely be sold in the week before the Joe Schwartz ’83 Memorial Run/Walk on Sunday April 28.  I am hoping to have a table set up in the DC.  There will be an additional sale in March for which there will be a Facebook event.

How can readers get in touch with you/ get informed about the next time you’ll be selling them?

Readers can order cookies by the dozen for this in advance by sending me an email at eperkoff@haverford.edu or sending me a Facebook message anytime between now and March 10.  Although there will be cookies on sale in the DC the week after Spring Break they will be in limited quantities so I suggested pre-ordering. Any clubs that are hoping to raise money for a charitable cause through cookie sales can contact me through email.
