Guy-necologist, The Ladies’ Doctor: What He Wants for Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

My mom always said that when it comes to giving gifts, it is the thought that counts. For birthdays and Christmas, Mama was wrong. But for Valentine’s Day, Mama was spot on.

What’s the difference, you might be asking? Well, ladies, hold your bonnets and grab a bunch of paper towels to clean up the aftermath ’cause the Doc is about to blow your minds with two words: wish lists.

Birthdays and Christmas, unlike Valentine’s Day, involve those pieces of parchment which detail every person’s deeply desired gadgets and gizmos to be parceled and presented to them, as they act surprised unwrapping said gifts in front of their friends and family. Valentine’s Day has no such nonsense. This day for lovers has no embedded expectations, just an open invitation to express your true thoughts and feelings to that special someone.

So, my long-distance, confused lover girl, so long as it is thoughtful, I bet your boyfriend will be more than happy to receive any gift you send him.

But just in case that is not enough direction, let me guide you a bit more. You say you want to give a gift that is cute, funny and reminds him of you, but not mushy or corny. Give him a gift that plays off of an inside joke you have with him. That way it is cute, funny, and smart (like you, I hope). And there is nothing that will remind him of you more than an inside joke that you both share.

Some of the most thoughtful gifts I received were things that were neither practical nor could be used everyday. A completely awesome and fully-planned date night, a framed picture of the two of us, and a day of paintball with my guy friends were just a few of the thoughtful gifts that I’ve received in the past. None of these were the gifts I was expecting, but was definitely grateful to receive.

I hope you have a great Valentine’s Day, and in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, here is a short clip of one of the many great men who inspired me: Saturday Night Live’s The Ladies Man – Valentine’s Day.
