Three Continents: Three Styles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Carleton chapter.

It’s highly possible that many of us are overly green with envy at the moment. I’m not talking about being mildly jealous of your friend who pulls off her five midterms with less than two hours of studying. It’s that other friend of yours who’s jet setting to a luxurious tropical destination for spring break. Let’s face it; you feel that you’re just a little more deserving of such a trip. Unfortunately, I can’t wave a magic wand and hand you an all-expenses-paid beach vacation. However, I can lead your imagination to paradise and together we’ll take a look at the trends that are turning heads on the beaches of Morocco, the USA, and Argentina.

First Stop: Morocco

To pin-point the big trends on the beaches of Morocco is tricky business. On one hand, the country has a large tourist-based section that is comprised mainly of American and European visitors who bring a very traditional, triangular bikini top culture to main beaches such as the Rabat Beach. On the other hand, the predominant religion in Morocco is Islam and therefore many Muslim women opt to sport more conservative trends, equally as fashionable, which is important to note. Below, is an image of a woman modelling a head to toe swim outfit that is common to see on Moroccan beaches.

Next stop: Argentina

Now it’s time to take a short detour down to Latin America, where one trend in particular is undoubtedly spicing up local beaches in big party cities like Buenos Aires. Bright colours are a signature feature of any piece of South American beachwear but even more daring is the infamous cut-out one piece. This simple idea for a swim suit has made huge splashes onto the Argentine fashion scene. It symbolizes the very liberal nature of Latin American fashion and the relationship it has with female sexuality and the body. Pair this swimsuit with a hat and some jewels and you’re ready to go.

Last Stop: USA

Now it’s time for us to travel a little closer to home for our final destination. Spring break is without a doubt much more affordable if you’re only venturing south of the border, but I thought I’d take you around the world first before we came back to North America. Something that has me all giddy for swimsuit season is the new and improved bikini. It has essentially been reborn but this time with actual support for our upper lady parts. Aerie recently introduced a whole line of swimwear with tops that are like bras but with swim suit material, under wiring, padding and all! This is sure to be a hit on the east coast, like on Daytona Beach, Myrtle Beach and Key West.

Now that we’re all back safe and sound in Canada from our little trip, hopefully we all picked up some sun rays from all those gorgeous beaches.  Also, I’m thinking we’re all in a more positive headspace now. Even if we’re not boarding a plane in the coming days to a tropical resort, we’ll all have sweet dreams of crystalline beaches and sky blue waves tucked away in our minds. One last thing, we’re over halfway through our Canadian winter. Happy Spring Break collegiattes!
