The 10 Commandments of Being a Good Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

1. Thou shalt not covet thy best friend’s boyfriend.

Girls, I don’t care if he’s Channing Tatum or Prince Harry, if he’s dating your best friend, then he’s off limits. Trying to steal your girl’s man is the number one way to get you’re a$$ kicked to the curb.

2. Thou shalt not date thy best friend’s ex.

Here is the Cardinal Rule: if she cried over him, you can’t date him. Even if she says that it’s okay, your friendship will never be the same.

3. Thou shalt not take thy best friend’s name in vain.

Fights happen. You’re not always going to get along with your best friend all of the time. Even when that happens, don’t talk about her behind her back because I promise that anything you say will get back to her. If you have a problem, confront it with her directly.

4. Thou shalt not stab thy best friend in the back.

When times are tough, sometimes it’s hard to remember where your loyalties lie, but remember all of what you two share and don’t betray her.

5. Thou shall honor thy friend.

Everyone’s life can get hectic from time to time, but it’s important to always remember your best friend and who was there for you all along and stand up for her when it counts.

6. Thy must make her a priority.

When your best friend needs you, she needs you. It’s your job to let her cry on your shoulder, vent to you, or bounce ideas off you.

7. Thou shall covet the saying “hoes over bros.”

Your allegiance will always be to your best friend, so don’t make your boyfriend a priority.  Don’t let a guy come between the two of you – your best friend has been there and always will be, boys come and go.

8. Thou shall always keep her secrets safe.

There’s a bond that you two share and with that, there are secrets that come with the territory. It’s your job to guard them no matter what because trust and loyalty are the most important things in your relationship.

9. Thou shall be honest with one another (even when it hurts).

A best friend should be someone that you can tell the truth to, even if and when the truth hurts. Whether she needs to reevaluate her relationship with her boyfriend or needs a breath mint, just be truthful. Being honest (even brutally) will show her that you care to tell her when no one else does.

10. Thy friendship shall endure all obstacles.

You go from being strangers, to acquaintances, to friends, to best friends, and eventually to sisters. Your relationship should be something to treasure and something that can triumph over every obstacle and hindrance that gets thrown your way. Lifelong friendships are special and yours will always be one of a kind.

Hey everyone! My name is Becca DeMello and I'm a Junior, majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Marketing and Psychology at Suffolk University in the great city of Boston, MA. Aside from Her Campus, I'm also involved in Theta Phi Alpha, one of the sororities here on campus! I love books, dogs, running, dressing up, writing, the Red Sox, memorable quotes, peanut butter, and cheetah print! I'll leave you with two of my favorite quotes that I think sum me up just right: "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." - Confucius "She is clothed in strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future." - Proverbs 31:25
