Foods that Improve your Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at JMU chapter.

Sometimes there isn’t a face wash or lotion that can bring out all of your skin’s potential. Feeling a bit dry? Do you look a little flushed? Want to look fresher and glow? Believe it or not, there are foods you can eat that improve your skin — here are some of those treats for you to enjoy!

1)   Cocoa Powder: Chocolate always gets a bad rap and is usually associated with acne. But in moderation, chocolate can be skin-friendly because of the cocoa powder ingredient. This hydrates the skin and makes it fresh and vibrant.  If you’re looking for a tasty chocolate bar, try looking for one with a high percentage of cocoa (some chocolate bars have this included on the labels). When in doubt, reach for a dark chocolate bar. Dark chocolate also contains high levels of flavonals, which are a type of antioxidant. Antioxidants improve skin by absorbing free radicals (molecules that can damage skin cells).

2)   Green Tea: Even if you’re not really stressed, sometimes your skin can be a bit flushed and temperamental. The best way to counteract this is with green tea. Green tea has numerous health benefits, but in the case of skin it is mainly known for the amount of antioxidants. On top of skin relief, drinking tea helps reduce stress — which is perfect for midterms and finals!

3)   Walnuts: It would be weird to just have a snack of walnuts right? But they actually have an ingredient that is wonderful for skin –fatty acids. The omega-3 fatty acid, plus the natural mineral copper, will help make your skin softer. Walnuts are so beneficial for skin that they even incorporate them into foot creams and lotions to prevent calluses — that’s pretty powerful!

4)   Yogurt: Yogurt packs some powerful proteins. These proteins help skin stay firm and fresh-looking. Greek yogurt has double the amount of protein, and mixing in berries or fruits is always an added bonus. Not to mention that yogurt helps your digestive track and you immune system — benefits all around!
