Best and Worst Jobs For College Girls

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

We all know that being a full-time student can be hard when you also need to work. Whether you need to pay for your own tuition or need some extra money, believe it or not there are certain jobs that are better than others. If you want a job that is good for your schedule and gives you time to get your schoolwork done, consider these awesome part-time jobs.

Do: Receptionist– being a receptionist is a wonderful opportunity to build your communication skills. It will prepare you for a future career. You will most likely have a set schedule, which is ideal for organizing your life. Some jobs will even let you do your homework during downtime. Finally you wont go home exhausted from being on your feet all day.

Don’t: Telemarketer– you may think that this job is similar to a receptionist, but it is not as welcoming. You are often paid on commission and could be easily laid off. Also, no one wants to be yelled at by potential customers on a daily basis.

Do: Work for your school– I have learned from experience that your school understands your schedule. They are more likely to give you time off and prepare for finals. They understand that you are a student and that school comes first. You will probably be given pretty easy tasks that wont be too hard on your body. Also, most on campus jobs let you do your homework during downtime.

Don’t: Sales Associate– You probably think that working in retail, especially at a clothing store, would be ideal. This is most likely false. You could work sporadic hours and on weekends. Many stores don’t close until 9pm, so there will be many late nights. Upset customers will also put a damper on your day. Lastly, you might end up doing much physical labor such as lifting fixtures and boxes.

Do: Hostess – This is a good job for you if you have a nice smile and like to dress up for work. You could work at a beautiful restaurant and a nice environment. This us also a wonderful opportunity to work your way up to be a waitress and make some awesome tip.

Don’t: Fast Food Worker- Do you want to come home smelling like grease everyday? No one does, so this is not a good job for you. The odds are that you will deal with many hungry costumers that will blame you for any discomfort. You may also have poor scheduling, such as early morning or late night shifts.

Ideally once you have snagged one of these great jobs, you will be making some extra cash, but you wont be overloaded with too much work in stress.
