Fashion Blog: DIY Ribbon Racerback Tank

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CMU chapter.

About the Project:

As you can tell from my other blog posts, there are a number of ways to revamp old t-shirts, and this is just another one of those ways. This tank adds an even cuter feminine touch with a bow in the back. And the best part is: it takes just minutes to make!

Materials Needed:

-Old t-shirt (Mine is a hideous one from freshman year in high school; feel free to cringe)

-Scissors

-Ribbon (any color)

Step-By-Step:

1)      Take your t-shirt and lay it flat. Laying it flat will prevent jagged edges when you are cutting and it will be more precise. As you can see, my old high school freshman t-shirt is both hideous and terrifying. Time for a makeover!

2)      Starting from the top of the shirt, cut a U-shape around the collar. Next, measure how large you want your straps to be. Cut straight down about ¾ of the way and then curve the cut outwards and finish right below the sleeve seam. On the bottom of the shirt, cut a large upside-down U starting about an inch above the bottom. This will give the shirt a unique high-low effect.

3)      Take your ribbon and cut about 1.5 feet of ribbon. Fold each end in half and snip a small part off diagonally. This will ensure that the ribbon will not unravel.

4)      Flip your shirt over to the back and tie the ribbon about ½-1 inch above the bottom of the straps. Make a bow and double knot. Trim the ribbon if necessary.

5)      And there you go! You can wear this shirt wherever and however you’d like. It’s also a quick way to look cuter at the gym.
