Hello Spring and for us college kids that means finals, papers, projects, group presentations, studying, “libing” while washing it all down with copious amounts of caffeine. Need a break? Spring is the most beautiful time in the District so why not take advantage of the exciting and interesting museums and exhibitions DC has to offer? Drop those books and put on your walking shoes because we are about to explore the top five exhibitions that our nation’s capital has to offer.
The Postal museum is a must see! Entering the dismal lobby, I immediately dreaded the postal artifacts I knew were coming around the pike. Heading down the escalator transports the museum’s visitors from a dingy lobby, to a postal Disney World. Planes hanging from the ceiling, an indoor forest showcasing the Pony Express and a hands on mail sorting tutorial. I promise you this museum will be anything but boring! Make sure you check out the gift shop for all things postal including special stamps, sold only at the museum.
4. The Newseum– The Story of News
One of the newest museums in the District, The Newseum and more specifically the exhibition, “The Story of News” has to be included in the top five. “The Story of News” displays more than 30,000 newspapers from across the globe, including newspapers from five centuries ago. If you’re strapped for time, (you can spend days in The Newseum and not see everything), this exhibition is the one to see, because it explores and shows visitors the rights all Americans are entitled to including freedom of the press and free speech.
3. The National Museum of Natural History– The Gem Gallery
Diamonds and Rubies and Sapphires oh my! Imagine seeing these gems in their natural state before they are turned into magnificent pieces worn by kings, queens and maybe your finger as a future engagement ring. “The Gem Gallery” is a diamond connoisseur’s dream! See the famous Hope Diamond, Royal Jewels and gems donated by Tiffany & Co. If you’re stressed, this will definitely put some sparkle in your day.
2. The National Gallery of Art– The Rotunda
Okay this isn’t an exhibition but it should be. The Rotunda is one of the most beautiful works of architecture I have ever seen. It is a work of art, housing other works of art. When you enter the National Gallery and head up the grand marble staircase of the West building, one does not expect the colossal green marble columns and large fountain in the center surrounded by lush greenery and perfectly bloomed flowers. It is truly an overwhelming experience when walking into The Rotunda. Do not forget to look up when you visit because you will miss the grand, domed, coffered ceiling that is truly a sight to be seen.
1. The Hirshhorn– Sculpture Garden
The Sculpture Garden at the Hirschorn is not only a beautiful outdoor space it also displays some of the most famous sculptors’ works in the world. It also happens to be one of the most calming and tranquil places in the District. Works by many famous artists including Auguste Rodin and Dan Ghram appear in this space and surprisingly by Yoko Ono as well! Visiting the sculpture garden transports the viewer from the busy city to a peaceful and serene space. A perfect way to take a break from the insanity of finals!
