This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Last October, the United Nations sanctioned the first ever International Day of the Girl on October 11, 2013 to raise awareness of issues that face girls around the world. From child marriage, poor access to education, and general inequalities, activists around the world joined hands to expose the importance of improving conditions for girls in impoverished countries. At Virginia Commonwealth University, the young women and men of Her Campus VCU were one of two groups in Virginia who hosted one of these events. As an extension to their event in October, Her Campus VCU will host a screening of 10×10 Girl Rising on April 26, 2013 to spread a single message: educating girls in developing countries will change the world.

10×10’s feature film, Girl Rising, is a social action campaign directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins, and created and launched by an award-winning team of former ABC News journalists in association with The Documentary Group and Paul Allen’s Vulcan Productions. The documentary tells the story of 9 girls from 9 countries, written by 9 celebrated writers and narrated by 9 renowned actresses, including Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Alicia Keys, and Selena Gomez.

Her Campus VCU is teaming up with Intel to screen the documentary to change people’s minds about the importance of educating girls, in hopes that the support of everyday people encourages governments and global institutions to enact and enforce laws that ensure every girl has the equal opportunity to fulfill her full potential. Because when girls are educated, the opportunity to reduce poverty, child mortality, population growth, HIV infection rates, corruption, and the conditions that lead to terrorism are dramatically improved. The overall well-being of girl’s families, communities, and their countries will create a ripple effect to significantly change the world.

All Virginia Commonwealth University students and staff are encouraged to attend the screening of a documentary the New York Times calls “one of the hottest ’cause’ documentaries in years…” The event will take place on April 26, 2013 in The University Student Commons, downstairs in the basement/ Commons Ground at 6:30 pm until 10 pm. Packaged snacks and soft drinks will be given to early guests. The documentary is approximately 101 minutes long, so there will also be time to socialize, network, and discuss the documentary among guests.

RSVP on the Facebook Event but please note that this event is a closed event open to only VCU students and staff!
