My Current Obsession: Yoga

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I am in no way health-crazed.  In fact, I’m snacking on junk food as I’m writing this now (not sorry).  Lately though, I’ve found myself secretly falling in love with power yoga at the Plex.  I decided to go one Thursday afternoon after a good amount of pleading on the part of one of my friends.  An hour later, I left the dimly lit room a completely changed person.

Yoga is unlike any other workout I’d ever tried before.  It’s helped me concentrate on muscles I didn’t even know existed, all while ridding my soul and body of any negative energy.  The room is usually packed with other students, yet it never feels pressuring or competitive.  Everyone there focuses on himself or herself, so it isn’t terribly embarrassing when I repeatedly lose my balance.  The instructor is incredibly sweet and helpful, and after some time, I began developing a different kind of strength— one that felt a lot more mental than just physical.  For me, yoga isn’t just about squeezing in a workout into my busy schedule.  It’s freeing in a sense that I know that for one hour, I can focus on just me.  I don’t have to think about school and all my pressing deadlines, I can forget about the drama that engulfs my life at times, and I can rid myself of all my accumulated stress.  And trust me, at our age, with all our hectic lives, that is the best gift you can possibly give yourself.

I’ve made a promise to myself to make time for yoga.  It’s so easy to make excuses as to why you didn’t have time to work out today (I’m an expert), but this is something I’m committing to.  It’s an experience I’d recommend everyone try at least once, and who knows, you might just get hooked like me!
