The University of Rochester fall sports teams have been underway for about a month and are off to a great start. This week’s Campus Celebrity is Provo, the man behind the scenes that keeps the teams up and running.
1. What is an example of one of your days at work?
I’m in around 8am to start the laundering of practice gear from the previous day, then laying out or organizing any uniforms that may need issuing. I make sure football practice equipment is up and running and safety check that equipment. I’ll usually close down the stadium between 9-10pm depending on how busy the next day will be.
2. What do you consider the most fulfilling part of your job?
It’s a toss up… I get to do what I love, which is working in athletics. I go to my job everyday but it doesn’t feel like work. Secondly, I get to work with some amazing young people who I have the chance to get to know during their four short years here.
3. Do you have a favorite athletic event or a time of the athletic year that you look forward to the most?
I really enjoy the fall season. It is so busy, there is always something going on. I look forward to Meliora Weekend when I get a chance to see some of the alumni. There’s nothing like game day!
4. For all of the years you have been working at UR, who as an athlete has stood out the most to you and why?
There have been so many great athletes to come through the UR, it’s hard to pick just one. If I had to choose one I would pick John DiBartolomeo, a men’s basketball player from 2009-2013. He was a great player who won numerous awards including Division III Player of the Year. What I loved about him was how hard he worked and how modest he was.
5. Can you recall a game or sporting moment that you would consider your favorite?
There have been so many great moments for me during my 8 years that it’s hard to pick just one. I’ve seen basketball games won at the buzzer, field hockey upsets, soccer matches won in the 110th minute. I even went to the women’s basketball final four in 2009-10. It has been a great ride so far and I can’t wait for the next great moment.
