Cupcakes for a Cause

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

This week Ohio University students will join forces with schools across the country to change the world one cupcake at a time. You heard us right: cupcakes! Ohio U’s Her Campus will be stationed in Baker this Thursday and Friday selling tie-dye cupcakes to raise money for the non-profit organization She’s the First. Our Tie Dye Cupcake Bake Sale will be taking place on the first floor of Baker from 10 to 12 on Thursday and 1:30 to 3:30 on Friday.

She’s the First is a non-profit organization that encourages young women to work together to promote female education in developing nations. Barriers to girl’s education in developing nations are a problem that many Americans neglect to acknowledge. However, once you get the facts about this problem it becomes clear how crucial it is to support girls striving for an education in such countries.

For example, only 1 in 5 girls in the developing world finish primary school. The remaining 4 girls, who won’t complete primary school, face a future filled with risks and dangers such as unplanned pregnancy. However, the girl who does have access to the rare opportunity will succeed in significant and noticeably different ways for a girl in her society. Studies show that with an education, girls are physically healthier, better prepared to resist domestic violence, and earn higher wages. The lifestyle lessons taught in school empower young woman to further their role in society and break the cycle of poverty.

The She’s the First tie-dye cupcake campaign is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers. In 2012, She’s the First was able to raise $97,838 through fundraising. With this money the organization was able to support 150 girls in their partner schools in eleven different countries. The organization’s website promises that “all donations from the general public go directly towards sponsoring girls in partnership programs.” Ohio U’s Her Campus looks forward to making its own sweet contribution to help break educational barriers for girls with this year’s tie-dye cupcake sales.
