Best Places to Study Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Elon chapter.

We’ve all heard it: college is the time to “find yourself.” But what does that mean?

It could mean any number of things. From picking the furthest possible university from your hometown to taking classes and joining clubs to try things you have never experienced before, there are a number of ways to satisfy your curiosity and discover new parts of yourself.

Perhaps one of the most common routes for this discovery process is studying abroad.  There is no better way to figure out who you are and what kind of person you want to be than living in a country with a different language, culture and customs.

Over 70% of Elon University students study abroad at least once before graduating. With over 100 different program options there are places and curriculums suitable for every interest and personality.

Below lists some of the most popular study abroad destinations for Elon students:

Barcelona, Spain

Located on the coast of Spain, Barcelona has plenty to offer college students who are looking for the quintessential study abroad experience. An infamous nightlife, a plethora of art museums, and a city that boasts old and new architecture, an incredible soccer team and a vibrant culture- what isn’t to love? Situated between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the city also offers escapes to the beach or a hike with quite the view.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague, notably recognized by the media as “Europe’s up and coming city,” has one of the most remarkable and violent histories. This expansive city boasts a plethora of museums, architectural monuments, a castle and plenty of bars where the beer is tapped beneath every table.

London, England

Fish and chips and afternoon tea anyone? London’s prominent history and cultural similarities draw American students for study abroad every semester.  Here students can immerse themselves in British history, culture and customs without being overwhelmed by a language barrier. Not to mention who wouldn’t want to study where Kate Middleton and Prince William reside?

“London is one of the most cutting edge and international cities in the entire world- I miss it every day! The city is both a fashion and finance capital, and the blend of competitive and creative energy there is unlike anywhere else. It’s impossible to be bored or not fit in, because there is so much to do and see. “ – Jen Frias, Senior

Florence, Italy

Want the European city experience but don’t want to be overwhelmed with a urban landscape comparable to New York City? Florence is a spectacular small European city decorated with narrow cobble stone streets and architectural elements reflective of the Renaissance period.  Choose this city and you will be in a central location home to famous artwork, an elaborate history and the most delectable food in Europe, all of which are within walking distance!

“Florence is by far the best city in Europe to study abroad. It is the perfect blend of old and new with the culturally rich history and modern new restaurants and clubs. Every single alleyway, bridge and piazza are absolutely stunning and unique. Plus, you can’t even compare the food in Tuscany to anywhere else in the world, my mouth is watering just thinking about!”- Kara Damiano, Senior

Capetown, South Africa

Interested in more of an outdoors experience? Capetown, one of the safest places in Africa to visit, offers an expansive landscape on the coast of South Africa.  From sight seeing to safaris, there is something for every inner adventurer to enjoy.

“My experience studying abroad in Cape Town was the most amazing five months of my life so far. It is a place where you can surf, hike, wine taste, shop, and party all within a 45 minute radius. Although I went not knowing a single person, I came back with some best friends.” -Kaitlin Schwartz, Senior

Australia

If the atypical Europe experience is not what you are looking for but you aren’t looking for a drastic culture shock, Australia is your ticket.   Whether you choose Sydney or the Sunshine Coast, you will be greeted by remarkable weather, unique wildlife and barrier reefs unlike any place in the world.

Singapore

Looking for a culture shock? Singapore is one of the most culturally diverse, global cities in the world. The whole country is the city; it’s an island smaller than New York City but manages to have four official languages and a whole slew of incredible things to experience. The city itself boats a lively nightlife and a wide variety of cultural centers and unique cuisines. Outside of the city, tourists cango bike through rainforest trails in Pulau Ubin, kayak in the South China Sea, or visit the monkeys and enjoy the treetop walk trails at the Maritchie.

No matter which city you choose or the length of time you stay for, study abroad is an experience that will change your life and give you perspective about different cultures and customs.
