The night of Oscar nominee daystars gathered around to find out who the film critics favorites were (and to get a better idea on who might take home the coveted Oscar come March!). However, the Critic’s Choice Awards are a more laid back award show. With unique categories like Best Sci-Fi Horror Film and Best Action Film – and plenty of F-bombs – it was surely a fun night.
But that doesn’t make Critic’s Choice Awards any less of an award show. In fact, it can be a complete game changer – especially for the Best Supporting Actress category. Where Lupita Nyong’o won over Golden Globe winner Jennifer Lawrence.
Meanwhile the winners for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Comedy, Best Actress – Comedy, and Best Actor – Comedy all stayed true to the Golden Globe picks. Going to “12 Years a Slave”, Matthew McConaughey (“Dallas Buyer’s Club”), Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine”), Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyer’s Club”), “American Hustle”, Amy Adams (“American Hustle”), and Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Wolf of Wall Street”). Best Director was also once again awarded to Alfonso Cuaron for “Gravity”, Best Animated Feature went to “Frozen”, and Best Original Screenplay went to Spike Jonze for “Her”.
However, major differences were still in place. Including Best Score going to Steven Price for “Gravity”, Best Song going to the “Frozen” hit “Let it Go”, and Best Foreign Language Film going to “Blue is the Warmest Color” – which was completely snubbed by the Oscar nominations.
Some other awards that may be setting the stage for who will go home with the Oscars include “12 Years a Slave” winning Best Adapted Screenplay and “Gravity” dominating by winning Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sci-Fi Horror Film.
Another Oscar sneak peak could very well be the Critic’s Choice for Best Documentary “20 Feet from Stardom”. As well as “The Great Gatsby” and it’s artistic domination – winning for both Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
But when discussing the Critic’s Choice Awards you can’t forget the unique categories. Including Best Young Actor/Actress being awarded to “Blue is the Warmest Color” star Adele Exarchopoulos, Best Acting Ensemble going to “American Hustle”, Best Action Film going to “Lone Survivor”, Best Actor in an Action Film awarded to Mark Wahlberg for “Lone Survivor” and Best Actress in an Action film awarded to Sandra Bullock for “Gravity”. Meanwhile, even though the Oscar contender “Gravity” lost to “12 Years a Slave” for Best Picture it still took home Best Sci-Fi Horror Film.
There were also individual honors made to Benedict Cumberbatch for being Hollywood’s Hottest Star, Forest Whitaker was awarded the Joel Siegel Award for his great deal of charity work, and the popular “Before” movie series was acknowledged with the Louis XIII Genius Award.
