College is a great few years to create memories that entail us to grow in the process. As time moves on, we can’t always rely on a dorm. Either you want your own space or you’re over giving your school more money. So when the time is right, you put on your grown up pants and find your first place to live. For me, this was one of the most exciting moments of college, finally a place where you can live with people you like and don’t forget about the decorating!

Many of you may be as excited as I once was but have no idea where to begin. But don’t you worry; with my 5-step plan you’ll be moving into your new place in no time!

1. Where Are You Going To Live? – The first thing you need to do is actually find a place to live in! For most college students, particularly at SCAD, living in the downtown can get pricy fast. But since living close to campus is easier for most, you’ll have to get good at researching. Try to find apartments that offer pricing by the rooms instead of the whole apartment. This is also a great way to meet new people, especially for meeting other students with different majors.

2. Who’s Going to Share Your Space? – If you don’t like the idea of being adventurous and moving in with people you don’t know, try to find a good friend or friends who have similar likings as you. Just be careful as to who you decide to spend the next few years living with. Sometimes living with you best friend can be a dangerous or a good thing. Also be sure to keep in mind your price limit. Talk with your future roomies about the comfortable price range. You all need to agree on pricing before you can go out and find a new home. But however things turn out, you’ll learn from this experience!

3. Moving Day! – So you made it this far… Moving day! If you ready to move out of your parents’ house for good, be sure to have a moving truck or a couple of good friends to help you out. You can also rent a U-Haul , but be careful with the pricing because it can be at least $100 for a decent sized truck. If you just plan on using your car and a few friends, make sure your packing skills are up to par.

4. How to Add Your Mark! – Going to a design school means we all have a creative mind and ideas that we need to let out, wither it be a touch of paint or a couple of pictures, you need to make the space yours. I believe the colors of you new place make all the difference. So paint! This is most likely the first time you can paint your space any way, shape, or form. Have fun! And for those of you that don’t have to lucky privilege or a feeing a tad lazy, add things to you walls besides paint. Photographs, paintings or posters are easy ways to add your personality to a blank wall.

5. The After Affect. – Moving day can be crazy, emotional and stressful. So once the boxes are empty, the suitcases unloaded and at least a bed to sleep in is made, relax. Sit down, take a breath, and think about all the fantabulous memories you’ll be making in your new home!

Good Luck!
