5 Tips on How to Survive Chiberia

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Chicago, we officially have a love hate relationship with you. For those of you not from Chicago, this winter in the city you have experienced #chiberia; a term used to describe Chicago’s harsh winter season.  This winter’s polar vortex is definitely one of a kind. With temps dropping as low as -9 degrees, it’s important for every collegiette to stay healthy and strong by incorporating a few simple steps into their day to day routine. Here are 5 things you can do to prevent sickness, stay warm, and battle Chicago’s crazy weather!

Take vitamins

To prevent catching the flu or a cold, be sure to take some vitamin C and Echinacea. Echinacea is a popular herbal medicine that is available over the counter at pharmacies. It helps to achieve a healthy immune system while preventing some illnesses.

Layers on layers on layers

This one is a no brainer. Going to class or work at -9 degrees is not fun. Make sure you are layering up properly. Wear leggings under your jeans, double socks, and big comfy sweaters to keep warm.

Maintain a healthy, balanced diet

Try to incorporate more colorful fruit and vegetables in your diet. Whole grains, fish, and almonds are tasty foods rich in essential nutrients, Omega 3 and fiber. Another tip is to not over eat. It’s always best to eat until you are satisfied, not full. I usually like to eat many smaller portions throughout the day than bigger meals to help digest my food faster and not feel as stuffed.

Get physical

Nothing relieves stress better than a great run or workout. If you have trouble incorporating fitness into your day, try exercises you can do at the comfort of your room. Staying active improves your mood, boosts energy, and combats healthy conditions and diseases.

Eliminate sleep debt

People naturally sleep more and longer in the winter. Make sure you are catching up on your sleep and getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep each night. As college students, every extra minute or hour of sleep you can get makes a huge difference. You’ll have more energy to focus in class and do other daily activities.
