Back In The States With Emily Harman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Fordham chapter.

Emily Harman has wasted no time making the most of her Fordham career– and she’s only a junior! From organizations on campus, to highly competitive internships, to a semester abroad Emily is quickly checking accomplishments off of her Fordham to-do list. We’ve got the scoop on her experiences, and her advice for taking advantage of your education!

Where are you from? Brielle, New Jersey

What year are you? Junior

What is your major? Business Administration. Concentrations in Finance, Entrepreneurship and International Business.

What activities are you involved in? Smart Woman Securities and College Republicans.

How did you decide to come to Fordham? I wanted to be at a school near the city but had an actual campus with green grass and sports.

What is one thing (or a few things) that you missed most about Fordham while you were abroad? Both of my sisters, Abby and Shannon are at Fordham right now. Abby is a sophomore and Shannon is a freshman. I talked to them everyday and saw all of the pictures they were posting; they’re having so much fun and I couldn’t wait to get back and see them everyday. I also miss being involved in Smart Woman Securities (SWS). I have spent so much time doing things for the club and seeing the girls every week. I’m really excited to be back and to pick up where I left off.

Do you have any tips for students who are trying to balance schoolwork, extracurriculars, and other obligations like internships? Do as much as you can. You learn time management and will be more productive with a full plate, at least that’s the only way I get anything done. Try to do things you wouldn’t think that you would like or have no experience with. It’s all about the learning experience and finding out you like something that you never had an interest in before.

Do you have any tips for students who are thinking about studying abroad? Do it. Studying abroad has changed my whole outlook on life. I met some great people in the Fordham program as well as other students while traveling and many English people too.  Being in London had been the most amazing experience and I really didn’t want to leave. I’m actually trying to intern there this summer and possibly work there full-time for a year or two so that I can travel and continue to learn about London because 4 months was not enough time for this city.

What’s your favorite thing about New York? It’s a huge, fast-paced city and it’s crazy when you run into a friend on the street that you haven’t seen in so long. After traveling Europe I’ve learned no city compares to New York.

What’s on your NYC bucket list? To walk the Brooklyn Bridge because I still haven’t done that…

Do you have a favorite Fordham memory? Camping at Oktoberfest in Munich with Fordham friends while studying abroad.

What’s your favorite class you’ve taken at Fordham? Business Ethics or Global Investments in London.

Where’s your favorite spot on campus? Hughes Hall. I pretty much lived there last spring semester.

If you could give one piece of advice to a Fordham collegiette, what would it be? Surround yourself with positive people and dream big.

What’s your dream job? I want to own and run my own business I just don’t know what that is yet.

What do you think the best part of a Jesuit education is? Freshman year I had my first Theology class… I never really went to church growing up so it was a big learning curve but I ended up learning so much.

Who is your favorite professor at Fordham? Professor Romeo.

What’s one thing everyone would be surprised to learn about you? I have three younger sisters.

Pick one!

Bronx Zoo or Botanical Gardens? Botanical Gardens because I still haven’t been to the Zoo.

Arthur Ave or Fordham Road? Arthur Ave

Cafeteria or Grille? Cafeteria

RamVan or Subway? RamVan

Met or MoMA? Not sure

Hot Dog or Bagel? Bagel

Broadway or Off-Broadway? Broadway

Radio City or Madison Square Garden? Madison Square Garden

Central Park or Brooklyn Bridge? Central Park because I still haven’t walked the Brooklyn Bridge…
