Love is Not Just for Couples

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

The month of February is known for two things: being the shortest month of the year and being the month of chocolate, roses, the color pink and most importantly, love. However, not everyone is as fond of this “Hallmark Holiday” as I am. In fact, some people down right dread February 14 and curse anyone who decides to publicly express their love for love. But if you look closely beyond all the complaining, you will see that Valentine’s Day is much more than taking your significant other out for dinner and a movie. Here are a few ways to spend your holiday spreading love and happiness:

Volunteer: Easily one of the best and easiest ways to spread love is by taking some time out of your day to do something for others. There are so many different places that take volunteers, but some of my favorites to help out with are animal shelters, soup kitchens, and homeless shelters. Jus think not only will this make you happy but you will also make a lot of people (and animals) happy.

Donate: I like to think of this as a win-win situation and you can donate just about everything! This includes (but is not limited to) clothes, shoes, non-perishables, or furniture. Think about all of those shoes that have only been worn once or what about that blouse you bought and realized it was too small after you took the tag off. All of those items could be the perfect gift to brighten up someone’s day.

Become a mentor: Think about something you are really good at, is it a skill or maybe you are really, really good at math, unlike most of us. Take those skills and smarts and use them to become a mentor for kids or someone your age. You can check out your local day care center or a YMCA to see how you can help someone improve his or her weaknesses.

Visit seniors: Senior centers are not only always taking volunteers but the residents absolutely love it. Just stopping in to say hello and listen to their stories is enough, while other times you can read to them, play cards, and even get them moving by busting a move on the dance floor.

Be kind to yourself: Above all else, this is the most important. Take time to love yourself and do what makes you happy. Go get a mani-pedi, meditate, paint or blare your music and dance your heart out. Whatever you do you will find that by doing those things you’re spreading love and happiness to everyone around you.
