Laughter is the Best Medicine – Celebrity Mean Tweets Edition

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Duke chapter.

Actors, athletes, and musicians have all been subjected to cruel comments from people they’ve never met before. But with the help of Jimmy Kimmel, celebrities are getting the last laugh.

Most of us “normal folk” aren’t worried about turning our computers on to find notifications of some not so nice Tweets, but we can all still relate to the idea of not taking ourselves too seriously. At Duke, we are in an EXTREMELY competitive environment where perfection is expected. Whether we’re trying to be at the top of our class or landing the best internship for the summer, we are constantly surrounded by pressure to succeed. But trying to maintain perfection takes a lot of work and is rarely feasible, so instead of trying to accomplish the impossible, take a deep breath and LAUGH as hard as you can! Put on a crazy costume and look at yourself in the mirror or turn up the volume to your favorite song and sing/dance along to the words (even if you’re no Beyoncé). Whatever you choose to do, just make sure it brings a smile to your face because being able to laugh at yourself and not take things too seriously will make you feel better than ever before!

Laughter is associated with many health benefits. It is known to boost your immune system, lower stress hormones, prevent heart disease, improve your mood, and help to strengthen relationships. And, according to researcher Maciej Buchowski, ten to fifteen minutes of laughter will even burn 50 calories. So, there’s really no reason not to smile or try out a new laugh you’ve been working on because no matter how ridiculous you may sound, the sound of YOU laughing will always be the best medicine!
