TV TUESDAY: How I Met Your Mother

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

For those of you that don’t know, How I Met Your Mother is now in its 9th and final season. As sad as it may be to see our favorite MacLaren’s crew close its doors I can’t help but think of some of my favorite moments from the show. It might be hard to slim down my list of favorites but I’m here to tell you what I think the 5 best moments are from HIMYM. WARNING… if you haven’t watched every episode there may be some spoilers in this list.

1. Haaaaave you met Ted?

The first episode is what drew me in when I started my Netflix binge of HIMYM. Although the phrase hasn’t stayed throughout the show it definitely helps solidify why we loved the show from the start. We see from the beginning just how crazy Ted is about finding love and of course Barney plays the Have You Met Ted game to help him meet women for the sole purpose of hooking up with them. We meet Robin as Ted is meeting Robin and it’s just a hilarious train wreck for the rest of the episode. Another great highlight is that we meet Marshall and Lily as they’re getting engaged. There are so many great things about the first episode but the best part is seeing Ted going through the beginning stages of his relationship with Robin.

2. Slap Bet

The Slap Bet comes in the second season and is probably one of my favorite ongoing stories from HIMYM. At this point Robin and Ted are dating and for some reason Robin refuses to go the mall with the gang because she hates going to the mall. She won’t give a reason but that doesn’t stop Ted from trying to find out why. Barney and Marshall make a slap bet that Robin was either in porn or got married in a mall. The loser has to suffer through getting slapped by the person who was right. Premature slaps happen several times before we find out the real reason why Robin hates malls which eventually turns into the real Slap Bet that has lasted up until the episodes airing now. F.Y.I. the real reason Robin hates malls is because she was a Canadian popstar that sang a song about the mall. It’s hilarious and worth watching in the video above.

3. Marshall and Lily get married

Marshall and Lily are the constant couple we can count on throughout most of the show. There was a little hiccup along the way to the wedding we were all waiting for but it was definitely worth the wait. The perfect wedding we expect isn’t the wedding we get but if you know the makeup of the show you know it’s perfect how it turns out. The real wedding doesn’t go as planned which freaks both Lily and Marshall out. By a twist of fate they both end up outside away from the craziness and they have a small ceremony with Barney as the minister and Ted and Robin as the witnesses. It’s a beautiful moment in the show that everyone should see at least once.

4. No Pressure

Okay, so I jumped way ahead to the 7th season but there’s a reason for that. This is one of my favorite episodes of the 7th season because we start to see the possibility (for real this time) that we’re close to meeting who the mother really is. Ted professes his love for Robin and Robin is confused from a very recent breakup so it makes for a crazy situation. Then Robin ends up having to go to Russia for an assignment at work and has to leave without officially telling Ted how she feels. In the meantime Barney is trying to look for a Marshall and Lily sex tape at their house, and in the process of tearing apart their house he finds a box of long term bets. We find out Marshall and Lily have created this hobby to predict what will happen in certain situations with the group. In the process of finding out the bets, we find out that Lily doesn’t think Ted and Robin will end up together. Who could really blame her though? When Robin comes back she says she doesn’t love Ted, but it helps Ted realize that he can start to move on even if it breaks his heart. This episode is worth the wait but you should watch it at some point in your life because it’s that good.

5. Ted’s night that never happened

I jumped ahead again to the 8th season but again it’s worth knowing about. The episode is called “The Time Travelers” because 20 years from now Ted and Barney show up to the bar to convince Ted to go to Robots versus Wrestlers. On the side there is also a disagreement going on between Marshall and Robin about her stealing credit for a drink that Marshall invented. It turns into a whole thing of writing disses on bathroom walls and doing a dance off. It all sounds like the normal fun the gang usually has each night at the bar but we soon find out that it isn’t really happening. It was Ted reliving a night that happened a few years before, it makes for a sad episode but it also gives us a time frame of how long we are from meeting the mother… 40 days to be exact. Ted imagines himself running to his future wife’s apartment and tells her that he wishes he had those extra 40 days with her. It pulls on your heart strings but it is one of the best episodes they have done because of how unexpected it is.

There you have it! There are plenty of more great moments from the show and with about a month of episodes left I’m sure this list could change. I’m sure it could probably even change if I decided to watch every episode all over again. There are new episodes airing every week from February 24 until March 31, so be sure to tune in to CBS Monday nights at 8 p.m. to see the final episodes play out. And if you haven’t started watching HIMYM yet then you should log onto your Netflix account and give it a chance, you won’t be sorry!
