The 5 Stages of TV Show Loss

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Everyone has a show they are obsessed with. From Lost and Breaking Bad to Friends and Gilmore Girls– we have all gone through the five stages of grief when our favorite show ends.

1. Denial

When it is first released that your favorite TV show is coming to a close, you absolutely cannot believe it. You tell yourself that it is a cruel ploy to gain more publicity for the show… even when they start the dreaded countdown of “X days until the series finale”.

2. Anger

When you realize your show truly is coming to a close, you begin to fault just about everyone. The producers, the network station, your friends who don’t watch it and therefore contributed to its end… It is just about the worst feeling in the world when someone says to you “Did you hear [insert show] was ending after this season?” Of course I have heard, and no, we aren’t talking about it. At this time it is important to remember that this stage will pass, so just try to stay calm.

3. Bargaining

You have begun to talk to your friends and family again, and you’ve begun to tell yourself that it could be worse. You try to remember the other TV shows you follow, and watch old episodes of your ending-show as a reminder of what a lovely experience it has been.

4. Sadness

As much as you tell yourself it is going to be fine, you cannot help the tears from welling up when you think about the loss of your favorite TV show. You have been following the story and characters so deeply that it feels like you can never get that part of yourself back. And maybe you can’t, and that’s okay.

5. Acceptance

Although it may be a hard time right now and you may feel empty after you finish the series finale, you understand that all good things must come to an end and you are happy you got to be a part of such a wonderful experience.
