Favorite quote: “There are people who have many and people who are rich.” – Coco Chanel

HC: What made you join the Caribsa Dance team?

KM: I’ve grown up with Caribbean heritage my whole life, and I’ve always kind of been on the sidelines, especially when it comes to music and dancing. I was so awkward! When I heard there was a dance team I got so excited because it was a combination of two things I was going for at the time: a way to figure myself out and a way to make friends. I don’t know about the former, but I’ve made some of the loveliest friends!

HC: How do you balance two clubs as a freshman?

KM: Precariously! There are some nights where my motto is “sleep is for the weak”. It’s all about prioritizing and communicating. I write everything down, And I have set days of the week where certain things need to get done. It also helps if you tell your professors and club members that you’re in two clubs; they might be a little more merciful when you slip up.

HC: Any advice to the incoming freshman?

KM: College is what you make of it. You might have this idea in our head that you’ll just make tons of friends by doing your daily activities, but that’s not the case! Find at least one club you would consider joining or even a study group. This campus is kind of like reddit. If you search, there’s a subreddit/club for everything. You have to put yourself out there and get to know people, otherwise you’re short-changing not only yourself, but the people who are missing out on getting to know you.

HC: If you could share something with the entire world what would it be?

KM: If there was one thing I could tell the entire world, it would be to stop being so self-absorbed. As the queen of selfishness it took me a really long time to learn this. But as it turns out, life has a funny way of letting you know that not everyone is out to get you. Most people are just for themselves.

HC: What do you hope to have had accomplished in ten years?

KM: In ten years I’m going to rule the world. I’m just kidding! In ten years, I hope that I have a sphere of influence that can help as many women as possible. As girls, there are certain aspects of our lives that get neglected or written off simply because we are women. I’m hoping that one day I can create an environment that fosters acceptance and peace for everyone who identifies as a woman.

Ana Valentin is a freshman at William Paterson with a wrong major in Environmental Science but will be transferring in the spring to Elementary Special Education and English Creative Writing, She has a burning love for all things glitter, beautiful, and fashionable. You'll probably find her in the student cafe sucking down a machiatto. If you do, feel free to say hello. She likes those too.
