8 Things Every Big Sister Will Understand

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at C Mich chapter.

Ok, so my sister and I have an extremely close relationship.  I understand that many sisters are not as close as us, but I have witnessed a lot of sister relationships in my day and I am happy to say that many seem as lucky as my sister and I.  Being close to your sister is truly something special.  It’s an unbreakable, unconditional bond that a best friend is hard to live up to.  A sister relationship can be challenging as well, from the big sister and little sister perspective.

I am a big sister, and here are a few things that I think every other big sister out there can relate to.

When your little sister borrows your favorite shirt without asking, World War III breaks out.

Get used to the fact that your friends are now hers.  The more she hangs around you guys, the more your friends will fall in love with her, and constantly ask “if your funny sister can come?!”  And trust me, she’s not going anywhere.  She loves hanging with the older girls.  When you say you need some space, she claimes you’re just jealous because your friends like her more.

Fights can get intense, and many names will be called.  However, what was a traumatic experience for all the bystanders of the fight, us sisters forget about the fight roughly 10 minutes to a half hour after it happened.  I can’t even begin to tell you how many times my sister and I have gotten McDonald’s after 15 minutes of going on a rampage of how much we despise each other.

Bribing the little sister should be considered a sport.  “Let me wear your necklace and I’ll take you to a really fun party…” or “If you buy me Panera Bread I’ll let you borrow my car,” work like a charm every time.

Your sister will give it to you straight up.  If you look like absolute crap one day, don’t expect your sister to sugar coat it.  Cherish this kind of harsh advice, because its hard to get the real truth elsewhere.

Despite how annoyed you can get of your sister, if anyone else messes with her, the claws are coming out.  If someone so even looks at my sister the wrong way, I become an over protective mother lion and a scary version of myself.

Having a little shadow that admires everything you is very flattering, however, sometimes can be a little much.  Especially when there are duplicates of all of your clothing items around the house because she just “had to have” the same exact things you bought at the mall.

Little sisters seem to get away with absolutely everything.  When your sister repeats your same “terrible” mistakes, your parents now find them hilarious!

The relationship with your sister is truly an unconditional, unexplainable one.

To all you big sisters out there, realize how lucky you are.  Sisters are guaranteed lifelong friends that aren’t going anywhere, no matter how ugly the fighting gets.
