Stress Management Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

It’s the last week of classes and you probably feel like you’re a chicken running around with your head cut off. Your bio lab report is due Thursday, you’ve got a presentation next Monday and you’ve got three finals in a row next Friday. The end of the semester seems so close yet so far; you’re drowning in work. Just take a deep breath, watch a video of cute kittens and relax. Managing your stress is vital to keeping your sanity during finals, so follow these tips and remember— just breathe.

1. Start a stress journal

This may seem a bit tedious and outdated, but it’s definitely helpful. You can write this down on paper or keep it as a word doc on your computer— your choice! Every time you feel stressed, follow these steps: write down the source of your stress, how it makes you feel (physically and emotionally) and what you did/can do to make it better. Most problems can be solved just by writing them down and working out a logical answer, so write away!

2. Learn to relax

Often times, we spread ourselves too thin. You go from class, to your internship, to the library to study— you haven’t taken any time for just you. Studying nonstop and spending hours on end in the library can add to your stress levels, so try and take at least a half hour (or even an hour) break. Go grab a cup of coffee, listen to music or watch your favorite TV show to pass the time! Taking at least half an hour a day will help reduce your stress level tremendously!

3. Read some inspirational quotes

Inspirational quotes are more vital than you think. If you’re feeling discouraged, just reading a few quotes about perseverance and overcoming hardships will motivate you to get through finals week! You can even combine this with the second tip; on your thirty-minute break from work, look up some inspirational quotes to keep you going. They’re much more powerful than you think— try it!

4. Write a daily to-do list

Looking at a planner can stress you out; you’re tempted to look ahead and see how much more work you’re expected to do. Instead, opt for making a daily to-do list. Every morning, just make a short list of everything that needs to be done that day. If you’re feeling extra-motivated, write the times you would like to work on each task. Not only will this keep you going, but if you meet the time you expected, you’ll feel accomplished for finishing a goal!

5. Talk to a friend

Whether your best friend is down the hall or across the country, phone her up and talk to her! Sometimes, the best way to relieve stress is to talk about what’s on your mind. Chances are, your best friend will fulfill her (or his) best friend duties and get your mind off all the stress; she’ll talk to you about the cute dress she almost bought last week and your worries will be long gone (for a little while, at least). You’ll be happy and smiling in no time!

Finals season is always the most stressful time of the year. Hopefully, these five tips will help you better manage your stress and calm you down! Keep in mind that everyone deals with stress differently and stress can physically and emotionally affect different people in different ways. Good luck, and as always, may the odds be ever in your favor.
