Natural (and easy!) Hangover Cures

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Marshall chapter.

It’s 2 a.m. and you’re feeling fine and frisky, Collegiette. Dancing the night away with some of your besties, flirting with the cute boy from your biology lab and of course…shots, shots, shots and shots!

Fast-forward to 10 a.m. and you may be regretting those last few shots of fireball you let that cutie from the bar buy for you.

Now you’re left with a killer headache, the thought of stirring from your cozy bed makes your stomach lurch and all you really want right now is a cheese quesadilla from Taco Bell. (Why don’t they deliver?!)

Well, lucky for you there are easy, natural remedies for the “morning after” for these wild nights.

First off, try to avoid popping pills to a) avoid your hangover or b) cure it. There are many health side-effects to taking pills to ease your pain. Ibuprofen can cause stomach bleeding and aspirin should NEVER be taken with alcohol because, like alcohol, it’s a blood-thinner, and can cause serious, long-term damage.

But don’t fear, here’s a list of some natural and safe “morning after” cures for the party girl in all of us.

  1. HYDRATE!This will help clear out the toxins in your body. Water is definitely great, but try tomato juice and mix in some cayenne pepper, sugar and lime to add to the hydration process and also replenish much needed electrolytes, all the while helping get your blood sugar back on track. No tomato juice? Try a glass of water with a pinch of salt and sugar before and after sleep.
  2. Tiger Balm. What is it, you ask? It’s a traditional multi-purpose remedy that naturally cures headaches! Dab some of this miracle cream on your neck and temples and wait a few minutes for your headache to disappear!Be careful and try not to get it into your eyes, this balm does sting!
  3. Mustard Bath. This may sound gross, but trust me, it works. Adding mustard to your warm, bath water helps flush out alcohol. Of course, the thought of bathing in mustard sounds pretty gross. Lucky for us they make mustard bath-powder. Steep in this mustard-concoction for about 20 minutes, dry off, take a nap and let it take its effect.
  4. Yoga! There’s a specific yoga position that will actually help “squeeze” the alcohol out of the organs. It’s called the Seated Twist. – Sit with your legs out, straight in front of you.-Bring your left up and cross it over your right, placing your left foot on the floor beside your right knee.- Rotate your torso to the left so you are twisting your body.- Bring your right arm across your body and place your right hand on the floor beside your left butt-cheek.- Inhale, exhale and hold the pose for 30 seconds and switch sides.

While the best thing to do to prevent a hang-over is to drink plenty of water and eat a little something carb-y to soak up the alcohol before you go to bed, many of us have too much fun to think about the consequences we’ll be left with the next morning. So be sure to try these tips the next time you wake up and tell yourself: “I’m never drinking again.” (Until Stacey’s birthday this weekend.)
