Career Fair: Dressing for Success

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

There are few things that make seniors more nervous than the prospect of graduating in May without a job lined up. With this ever-present cloud looming, it is important to make the most of the Career Fair taking place Thursday. Using these tips you will surely be dressed to impress and ready to rock the event.

1. Make-up

Keep it simple ladies. This isn’t the time to practice perfecting a smoky eye or test out your roommate’s new red lipstick. Keeping your make-up minimal will allow employers to focus on what you have to say and not wondering if you bothered to look in the mirror before you left. Stick with neutral shades and use a little blush or pinch your cheeks for color and you will be all set.

2. Skirts

I love a good bandage skirt as much as the next BC girl, however this is not the time or place to wear one. If it’s made of spandex or lycra leave it at home and opt for something you wouldn’t wear to a Mod on a Friday night. Try a pencil skirt with a longer hemline or to avoid the problem altogether wear dress pants.

3. Cleavage

I feel as though this one is obvious, but just in case I’m including it anyway. Keep it classy. Do up that extra button making sure the girls are covered.

4. Personal Style

Chances are you will be speaking with more than one employer. While some companies may appreciate your quirky personal style, many will not. Dress professionally and don’t use your wardrobe to stand out. You are all impressive women so instead have them remember you for your killer resume and intelligent questions.

5. Check the Weather

The only people who should ever be sweating in Conte Forum play on athletic teams. You will likely be nervous enough without the added stress of wondering if you are sweating through your jacket. If it’s hot, pair your blazer with a sleeveless blouse to help beat the heat and choose a pencil skirt over dress pants. Additionally bring face powder or oil-blotting sheets in your bag so you can freshen up and look your absolute best.

Lastly, ladies take a deep breath. It’s only September so don’t freak out if you don’t have a job offer yet. It may seem like all your friends know what they are doing after graduation, but trust me this is not the case. Your BC education has prepared you to be more than capable at effectively networking and utilizing this event to its fullest potential.  Stay positive and confident and you will be amazing.

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
