Autumn is finally here, which means the reign of all things pumpkin spice, oversized knitwear and the Disney Channel original movie, “Halloweentown” is upon us. As it turns out, this is also the perfect time to go on dates and get cozy with your significant other. Or so I’ve been told… I’ve been single for two years, but don’t worry, I’m totally not bitter.
Anyway, you might be saying to yourself, “yes I do have a significant other and I would enjoy going on fall themed dates with him/her, but I don’t really have that much money.” First off, contratulations on being that successful in your romantic life, but you really don’t need to rub it in. Seriously – it’s rude to brag. Secondly, I’ve compiled this list of cheap date ideas, as the title implies, so don’t get stressed out.
I am well aware that I, a person who is currently eating ice cream in bed and binge watching “Criminal Minds,” may not be an expert on the subject. While you have every right to be concerned about taking relationship advice from a single girl, I’ll have you know I’ve taken the liberty of asking my friends who are currently in relationships to help with this article.
1. Avila Valley Barn
Avila Valley Barn was the first response from my roommate when I asked her what she recommended for cheap date ideas during the autumn. During the fall you can pick apples, drink apple cider, pet farm animals and buy pumpkins. *It should be noted I also asked her boyfriend for ideas but his response was “stepping on crunchy leaves together,” which I am not entirely sure is an activity that could even be considered a date. But he’s been in a committed relationship for four years, so I guess I’m not going to knock it.
2. Morro Bay Farmers Market
The farmers market is completely free and open every Thursday afternoon. I would recommend bringing a blanket and heading out to the beach after spending the day looking at homemade jewelry, smelling artisanal soap and gorging on kettle corn.
3. Art After Dark
Art After Dark takes place the first Friday of every month, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m in downtown SLO. Take that cutie in your 8 a.m. art history class, grab a hot chocolate and enjoy supporting local artists for free.
4. Mid State Scare in Arroyo Grande
The Mid State Scare is a haunted house that runs October 11 to October 31. It is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and is $10 per person. The website does warn that it is relatively frightening, but that only means you will an excuse to hold your date’s hand.
5. Just Don’t Go on Dates
Believe me, you save money. Granted, you may be alone on Friday nights but hey, now you have the money to splurge on the cookbook Solo Suppers. Bon appetit!
