On Surviving Final Year Fears and Reversing the Culture Shock After a Year Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Gulping down a tear or two with your final jug of sangria, you say your last goodbyes to your Erasmus buddies and get that sinking feeling. Fourth year is looming. Whether we like it or not, every language student on a year abroad eventually has to return to the lecture theatre and say “Hasta la vista” to those notorious Erasmus parties and “Hola” to writing lengthy essays in their mouldy student crib. CUE BREAKDOWN. After months of debauchery and (let’s be honest) dossing around, the first few weeks readjusting to academic life will instil dread in the toughest of students. But don’t panic- battle these bouts of sadness with our 10 reasons not to feel depressed about returning from your year abroad to fourth year fears…

1) You can show off your improved sexy Spanish accent and all the random vocab you’ve acquired.

2)  You’ve returned to uni as the most tanned person on campus. “Ooompa-loompa-doompa-dee-doo…”

3) And have acquired a renewed patriotic appreciation of how great Great Britain really is.

4) You can dish up a few of your favourite foreign delicacies for your housemates. Mmm. “Tastes like chicken, you say?”

5) You’re either fluent in the Chinese urban dictionary or have mastered every Russian swear word going. Cursing freshers when they pinch the book you need from Hallward has ten times the impact in German.

6) Your bed is no longer sandy and the thin cotton sheet that covered you has been supplanted by a thick feathered duvet.

7) You can boast about all of those hot Latino lovers…

8) …or just lie about it. Nobody has to know.

Who my friends think I pulled:

   Who I really pulled:

The end of your adventure abroad doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your intercultural journey. Don’t neglect to sign up to the language and cultural societies the university has available to you…

9)  You can now have DMCs with the international and Erasmus students, communicating beyond basic personal greetings…

10) … And crack jokes to them in Spanish.

¿Cómo te llamas?

…So your chances of pulling them have probably definitely quadrupled.

11) You’ll now realise why Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s are so essential to your life:

French shop assistant’s reaction when you ask on which aisle the Heinz baked beans are located.

12) You can now stroll along happily with your pasty skin and blonde locks, without suffering creepy glares and feeling like you’ve been mistaken for an endangered zoo animal.

13) You get to feel old, wise and important. Apart from the PHD and mature students, you’re now one of the oldest, most cultured collegiettes on campus. Obviously that’s code for queen bee of the library!

14) Market bar and Crisis have missed you. And you’ve missed those sweet Refresher and Haribo cocktails from CocoTang.

So you see girls…

Sam is a Third Year at the University of Nottingham, England and Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham. She is studying English and would love a career in journalism or marketing (to name two very broad industries). But for now, her favourite pastimes include nightclubs, ebay, cooking, reading, hunting down new music, watching thought-provoking films, chatting, and attempting to find a sport/workout regime that she enjoys!
