Her Campus Cutie: Q&A with Fernando “Ferny” Callejas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

With an easy going and cool personality, Fernando, who goes by “Ferny” to many of his Professors and peers, is just as laidback with a fun loving in pictures as in person.

Born in Nicaragua and moved to the U.S. at the age of two, Ferny is currently a Fourth Year English Major and part of the UCLA Writer’s Den as a volunteer. Previously, he was studying as a bio-medical engineering major for three years before changing his major to English. Although he has made the change, Ferny says that the sciences will always have a place in his heart.

Q&A:

What are your main hobbies?

F.C.  I love making music. I spend a lot of time messing around on either guitar, piano, or drums. I’ve recently taken up trying to play the violin, but it’s incredibly harder than I would have ever expected.

What is your current musical muse and genre?

F.C.  “Genre — beautiful music. (Laughs) just kidding, it’d probably be considered alternative, folk, indie.”

“My favorite band is Radiohead. Lately I’ve really been into Andrew Bird and Ben Sollee, both of whom are incredibly talented musicians.”

What are your aspirations or goals in life?

F.C.  “I never know how to answer this question because I think the idea of a “life goal” aspiration comes with too much uncertainty especially because most goals are shortsighted. As people we are constantly evolving, for example, what I wanted to accomplish just three years ago is certainly different than the things I want to accomplish now. So who knows what I’ll want to do, say, 40 years down the road. But if HAD to answer the question, here’s a lame general answer: to accumulate as many endearing memories possible before I die.”

What are your plans post grad?

F.C.  “I should probably really start looking into that. I’ve done teaching all my undergrad years, but I’m not entirely sure that’s the direction I want to go. I’m hoping an internship in the near future helps me decide. “

What campus clubs are you involved in?

F.C.  “The Writer’s Den! We teach creative writing to students in different campuses. I go to Markham, a middle school in Compton.”

One word that describes you.

F.C.  Friendly. :-)
