In high school, the thought of having a boyfriend makes many people cringe. To these people, wasting emotions on a relationship that is bound to come to an end seems futile and unnecessary. “Oh I just had a lot of flings in high school, but never a real relationship.”

Before I get into anything, let me tell you about my friend. During orientation, she was able to meet a couple people who eventually became her main group of friends. Sidetrack: even though it has only been 7 weeks since school started, doesn’t it feel like it has been at least a semester already? Anyway, she became interested in this guy after a couple of spontaneous hangouts and deep-talks. Feeling bored and curious, she asked him out to hang out with her– without the other people in their friend group.

So they had lunch together and whatnot and I guess she kind of started to like him more after that. But, she soon came to realize that he didn’t see her the same way. You probably have all experienced the painful listlessness and pangs of unreturned affection. After a couple weeks of intense emotional rollercoaster, she settled on an important conclusion: she was merely going through “a boyfriendless void”.

College is different than high school. Especially for BC students. There are so many places to go, so many things to do. Truth is, whenever I pass by picturesque streets of Newbury, I wish for someone to be next to me. I do too, occasionally feel the “void,” but it’s just a matter of time before I face the fact that there are so many things I could fill that void with. Just take a long walk around the reservoir while jamming to your favorite artist and appreciate where you are. College only comes once, and there are so many possibilities, so many endings. When the time is right, we will find whomever we are meant to meet. Relationships can’t be forced, right?

Nonetheless if you really like someone, ask him out. Who knows maybe ten seconds of insane courage could change everything.
