Campus Celeb: Brooke Sattler

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNL chapter.

If you happened to sit next to Brooke Sattler in class you might notice small things like her Facebook is set all in Spanish, or her many tattoos that are all about positivity. Brooke is the president of the Spanish club and a development coordinator of Camp Kesem here at UNL. Kesem is currently up for a civic engagement grant for the Camp which provides a free safe space for children of parents who have cancer in the Nebraska area. I had a small moment to sit down with the very busy sophomore to talk about her love for Spanish, Thanksgiving, and human rights.

What is your major?

Advertising and Public Relations/Spanish double major.

What is your favorite Thanksgiving meal?

I like going around saying what you are thankful for. Because it gives me a chance to see my family I only see one or twice a year, nice to catch up when we are in the spirit of thankfulness.

What are you thankful for this year?

I am thankful that I am healthy and that my loved ones are healthy. I ahve the opportunity to get an education, and that my parents are helping me with that. My brother, his partner, and I recently were a part of social media campaign called AskMeWhy project, which was a great experience. We raised 5,000 in under four weeks for equitable health care around the world and for Uganda through SocMed. While doing this we lived off of basic human rights, so until we raised 1,750 for instance we couldn’t wear shoes. On our first day I actually got stung by a bee on my foot while barefoot and it really set the tone for the next couple weeks where we started by only eating rice, not changing our clothes and not showering, to being able to eat vegetarian but not with silverware. I was very thankful for this experience.

What is your favorite part a part of the Spanish Club?

I like the people, we all share the love in common but we’ve grown together as a family. It’s become a good basis of friendship because we all love and share the same thing. I hang out with the Spanish club members outside of meetings because they’re really great people.

What inspired your love for the Spanish language?

I always kind of liked it, but when I travelled abroad I learned that effect language has on cultures. I literally geek out in phonetics class because of how language has evolved, and it has helped me learn how things in the English language ended up the way they are.

Spanish Club meets 5-6 in the Union on Wednesdays every week.
