Bundle Up! Winter’s here to Stay: How to Stay Warm in Freezing Temps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

This time of the year is usually jam-packed full of cold days, but up until very recently, Stillwater wasn’t experiencing too many of them. Well, say goodbye to that feeling! Winter has officially set in here on OSU’s campus, and students are left trying to stay warm with limited resources (I’m talking to you, Out-of-staters!) Not everyone can make a trip home on the weekend to get all of their warm clothing, or afford to buy a lot of new clothes, so what do we do? Here’s some tips on how to stay warm on a budget:

  1. Layer, layer, layer!

I can’t stress this one enough. Layering long sleeved t-shirts and jackets, cardigans and sweatshirts can add a lot of warmth without a lot of effort. It also lets you keep using the clothes you wore in the fall!

  1. Buy cheap head wraps and scarves

While in Walmart the other day, I noticed a lot of winter outerwear on the shelves. Curious, I walked over and looked at the beanies and scarves, and what did I find? Low prices on scarves, beanies and head wraps that are actually pretty warm. So, if you’re on a budget, I recommend spending the $15 total on 2 or 3 accessories.

  1. Cover your ears and head!

It’s a well-known fact that heats escapes from the head, but even if it didn’t, you should still be covering it. The ears are sensitive, and the cold gets to them a lot faster than other body-parts. A warm head/ears can make all the difference!

  1. Warm Socks=Happy Feet

I know I already mentioned layered clothes, but feet are important too! If you don’t have warm socks, your feet probably aren’t feeling happy. Most shoes (boots, too!) are not as warm as we want them to be, especially when there’s snow on the ground. So, invest in thick, warm socks, and if you don’t have the money, take to layering 2 or 3 pairs of socks to lock the heat in.

  1. Don’t Always Worry About How you Look

I know this is hard for some people (myself included!), but sometimes, when the weather is really bad, you’ve got to ignore your fashion sense. When the temps drop extremely low, you can’t always be wearing that adorable pea coat your mom got you. Sometimes, you’ve got to wear the puffy coat that makes you look like a marshmallow! Health is more important that style!
