6 Questions You’ll Inevitably Be Asked at Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Despite those festive holiday cups at Starbucks, Christmas is still a while away. Before we start buying presents and hanging stockings, we’ll be sitting at a table with a gigantic plate full of turkey, stuffing, a gigantic slice of pumpkin pie, and wearing our stretchiest pants.

And what would Thanksgiving be without family? We love our family, we really do, but there are some questions we’d rather not answer (or at least not have to repeat over and over.) But no matter how hard you try to steer the conversation, there are five questions you will always have to answer at Thanksgiving every year.

1) “How’s school going?”

Can we not talk about shool again EVER. Ask me my opinion about something that matters, like the newest American Horror Story episode.

2)   “…so what’s your major?”

Whether you’ve switched your major 6 times or have known what you wanted to do since you were 10, you’ve already been asked this question by friends, professors, parents, bosses—pretty much everyone you’ve ever spoken to. Just add your distant aunt to the list.

3)   And then the inevitable “Oh, so what do you want to do with that?” Note: Condescending tone and side eye may be included.

I’m just trying to relax before finals and eat some sweet potatoes, can we not add stress by talking about my future right now? Also, I have no clue what I want to do with my life, so there’s that…

4)   “Are you dating anyone?”*wink wink* *nudge nudge*

No, but thanks for asking. Try again next year.

5)  “How old are you now?”

Exactly one year older than I was last Thanksgiving.

6) “So how do you feel about (insert political/social/economic issue)?”

If you want to get into a heated debate while I’m peacefully enjoying my dinner, be my guest. But may I remind you that I go to one of the most politically active schools in the country? BRING IT ON.

In the end, our family is, well, family. So even though we may get some questions that make us want to give our relatives MAJOR side-eye, we still love them and enjoy spending time with them (even though we’d never admit it).
