It’s the time of year to start thinking about Christmas decorations, but when you live in a dorm room a big pine tree is not an option. Luckily, there are several DIY ways to solve this dilemma.

1. Wrapping paper

You can pick a dark green color and aim for accuracy, or go for any fun pattern. Paper Source makes great, high quality paper, but any dollar store roll will do. Trace a Christmas tree shape onto a big piece of your chosen paper, and cut it out. Tape it up on your wall and decorate it with a paper star and paper ornaments.

2. Paper plates

Pick up a stack of green paper plates from any party store and arrange them in a pyramid pattern on the wall. For added decoration, cut out a star from a yellow paper plate.

3. Yarn

Arrange tacks on the wall in a large outline of a triangle. Tie a long strand of yarn to the top tack, and continue to tie the yarn around each tack in a zig-zag pattern. As said before, add a star on the top or even a paper trunk on the bottom.

4. Lights

Follow the same tack formation as above but string Christmas lights through instead of yarn.

5. Sticky Notes

Grab a pack of sticky notes and create a huge pyramid shape with them. The edges coming up will look like branches of the tree.

6. Washi Tape

This fancy little tape has endless possibilities, especially around the holidays. You could find the tape in a Christmas pattern at a stationary store, but even a non-holiday pattern would make a great tree when taped onto the wall.

BONUS: If none of these satisfy your need for a real Christmas tree, head over to Faneuil Hall and take a look at their tree.
