10 Superfoods for Finals

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lasell chapter.

As the semester comes to a close, you begin to feel overwhelmed with final papers, projects and exams.  And with the stress of finals comes a lack of sleep and a good diet.  Rather, a completely terrible diet that consists mostly of Boomers, Einstein’s and goldfish in your room at 2AM.  Nevertheless, it would be beneficial to enter this period of hell on your game.

Below is a list of superfoods that have several health benefits, from antioxidants to Omega 3’s.  By replacing a bag of chips or a bowl of Easy-Mac with one of these foods, you are sure to be healthier than before you sat down to munch.  Though this list will not guarantee you a clean bill of health, it does include foods that promote brain function and higher energy levels.

  • Blueberries:  This fruit is the best source of flavonoids which helps preserve memory function.
  • Dark Chocolate:  1 oz. of dark chocolate a day is just enough to lower blood pressure, improve blood flow, and is high in antioxidants and flavonoids.
  • Walnuts:  These delicious nuts are high in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and omega-3 fatty acids.  Nuts in general are linked to heart health and can even improve your mood.
  • Salmon:  This fish is heart-healthy and protein packed.  However, to reap all the benefits, make sure you buy WILD CAUGHT vs. farm raised.
  • Quinoa:  This grain is packed with protein and low in calorie.  It’s also a great substitute for pasta and rice.
  • Avocado:  This delicious fruit is packed with 20 vitamins and minerals and is a great source of heart-healthy mono-saturated fatty acids.
  • Yogurt:  Yogurt is filled with calcium and “good bacteria.”
