Why is Capital Hoops the place to be this Friday?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Ottawa chapter.

We’ve all seen the ads at the gym. We’ve all seen the Facebook group. We’ve all heard the hype around campus. Capital Hoops is always the event of the season amid various balls and events in the winter. So when you’re deciding on how to spend this Friday night, grab a ticket in Montpetit or the Sports Complex, come out to the Canadian Tire Centre (buses will be provided from campus) and show your support for a couple amazing Gee Gees teams. This year is particularly special for these teams, and here’s why!

1. Well, our men’s basketball team is the number one CIS men’s basketball team in the country for the first time in our history.

We. Are. Undefeated. This. Season.

2. Carleton’s men’s team also happens to be the number two CIS men’s basketball team in the country.

Which means this is the game to be at because you can’t get much better than basketball than this!

3. The City of Ottawa Sports Award Banquet named the men’s team head coach, Jimmy Derouin, the 2014 Male Coach of the year.

4. They support some great causes!

Every year the Women’s basketball team dedicates one of their games to breast cancer awareness and fundraising with their Shoot for the Cure game. While team member Krista Van Slingerland co-founded a student athlete’s mental health initiative called SAMHI.

5. This season Johnny Berhanemeskel beat the Gee Gees career record for points and he’s still racking more up!

It’s also his last year playing with the Gee Gees. Let’s see him off with a bang!

6. The men’s basketball team was named the Pizza Pizza OUA Team of the Month this month! The highest prestige in Ontario Sports!

7. It’s a good chance to get out and show your school spirit!

Wear that hoodie you bought that one time in first year and you wear it proud!

8. To witness history be made as four amazing teams battle for the W.

See you there!
