Adarrell Gadsden ’16: Editor-in-Chief of The Johnsonian

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Major: Business Administration and Political Science

Hometown: Columbia, SC

Whether he is dancing to punk music in his apartment, running across the field with his lacrosse stick or laying out pages on press night; Adarrell Gadsden is a gentleman with a positive attitude and big dreams.

Her Campus: Why did you decide to apply for the editor-in-chief position at The Johnsonian?

Adarrell Gadsden: I got involved early on with The Johnsonian and my main goal was to eventually serve as managing editor. After serving as managing editor, the opportunity to become editor-in-chief presented itself, so I applied. Overall, I have served as a staff writer, science and technology editor, opinion editor and managing editor.

HC: What is something you love about your job?

AG: I love interacting with people. It really gives me a chance to experience new things and to hear other people’s stories. I really have one of the best on-campus jobs.

HC: What is one lesson you have learned from being editor-in-chief?

AG: You can’t be the nice guy all the time. Sometimes people are going to have their feelings hurt and as a leader, I can’t let that affect my job.

HC: What do you love about Winthrop?

AG: Everything!!! Our campus is so beautiful and diverse!

HC: What do you like to do in your spare time?

AG: I enjoy playing lacrosse, dancing (a lot), volunteering at Elevation Church and just really spending quality time with the people around me.

HC: What are you passionate about?

AG: I am very interested in higher education and the policy making that goes along with it.

HC: Who is your role model?

AG: I have tons of role models, however; my advisor Dr. Terry Ryan is someone I really trust. I feel like I can take any issue I am having to him and he will listen.

HC: What is your dream job?

AG: I would love to become a university vice president for institutional advancement some day.

I am Carolyn Rennix, a CoFounder of Her Campus Winthrop and a senior mass communication major at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. I am also the editor-in-chief of Winthrop's weekly student newspaper, The Johnsonian. I enjoy feature writing, photography and blogging -- all while drinking coffee at local shops of course. I was raised in a small seaside town, but I plan to travel and see what this world has in store for a young journalist.
