Reasons to Keep a Journal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

Regardless of whether you call yourself a writer or not, there are numerous benefits to keeping a journal. Whether you write once a day or once a month, journaling is a habit that everyone should consider taking up! Here are a few reasons why:

Remember your ideas – How many times have you thought of a fantastic idea, only to forget it later in the day? Keeping a journal is a great way to record your ideas. You can refer to it later to either develop your ideas, reflect on them or let them fade away.

A safe place to vent – Keeping your emotions pent up inside is not a healthy way to heal, but neither is taking it out on those around you. A journal is a safe place for you to let out your feelings without any inhibitions. You don’t have to fear judgment, and no one will be hurt by what you have to say. Most importantly, it gives you a chance to release any negative emotions.

Log your day – A journal is a good place to record the happening of your day. You can write every mundane detail, or only write down big events. Regardless, it’s a great way to chronicle your life. Years later, you’ll be happy you wrote down the important details – it’s like a written log of your life!

Remember to be grateful – “Gratitude journalling” is a recently new phenomenon where people write down everything they feel grateful for. It’s easy to get caught up in negative feelings and lose track of how lucky we are. Writing down things you’re grateful for will serve as an acknowledgment of the good things in your life.

It’s good for you – Writing a journal has proven health benefits. It allows you to de-stress, enhances creative thinking, and helps you to feel present and calm your mind. It’s just like meditation!

Lists – Write down the pros and cons of being a cat lady, make a list of all the places you want to travel, all the recipes you want to make at home, and the books you need to complete your personal library. List making is fun and therapeutic. With a journal, you can keep them all in one place.

Creative freedom – When it comes to journalling, you have absolute creative freedom. You can use it to write poems, chronicle your day, doodle, or make lists as mentioned above. A journal is a good way to explore different mediums of creation that you may be interested in. The only limitations are the ones you place on yourself.

Go down in history – Maybe 100 years from now, historians will find your journal and use it as an example of the quintessential mindset of college-aged girls. Stranger things have happened (talk about leaving a legacy!)

Only for you – Today our lives are very social. Between friends, significant others, and social media followers, it’s rare that we get a chance to disconnect and truly be alone with our thoughts. A journal is one of the few things that allows you to do this completely, and it belongs only to you. You do you, girl!
