Valentine’s Day is supposed to be one of the most special and romantic days of the year for couples. So why is it that you plan on stuffing your face with overpriced chocolate and drinking several glasses of wine while watching Titanic? Because of that not-so-fun thing called distance! Your guy is miles and miles away – in a different state maybe, or even a different country. They say distance makes the heart grow fonder, but when you’re surrounded by couples being cute and sappy, all you can think about is how much distance sucks. There is a way to make it work though: a long-distance Valentine’s Day! It might be tricky, you might feel silly, but in the end, getting to spend the day (kind of) with your special someone will be worth it. Here are some ways to have the best long-distance Valentine’s Day yet!

1. Dinner

Sometimes what we miss the most are the little things, like having dinner with your guy! Have no fear though, the Valentine’s dinner date isn’t off the table just because you can’t go to a fancy, overpriced restaurant together. Fire up FaceTime and you and your man can cook the same dinner together (or even order takeout if your cooking skills aren’t up to par). Eating the same meal while video chatting each other will be your version of a dinner date!

2. Dinner… and a movie?

The classic date: dinner and a movie. While you already have dinner with your date down, it’s time to kick it up a notch with a movie. Agree upon a flick and continue your video chat date, each of you watching the same movie at the same time – and chat about it as you go! It’ll be as if he’s there right next to you. Alternatively, you could both go see that movie in theaters that both you and your S.O. have been dying to go to. Try to go around the same time, and after you’re out, you and your guy can talk away (but don’t be that person who texts throughout the movie!)

3. Play a game together

The internet is many a splendored thing; you can find almost anything with just a couple clicks of the keyboard and mouse! So, find you and your S.O.’s favorite games online and have a game night, with or without video chat.

4. Send something in advance

Send your date his Valentine’s Day gift in advance and watch him open it via video chat. This way you don’t get to miss out on the special moment or his reaction. Struggling for gift ideas? Send him a book he’s been dying to read, a copy of his favorite movie, or the classic gift of cologne. You could even order him his favorite take out, in lieu of Valentine’s Day dinner.

5. Meet him halfway

Distance can be tough; travel is expensive, time consuming, and not always easy to find when you’re a college student without a car. And while meeting your beau at his home might not be an option, at least try to meet him halfway! You guys will be able to have a fun and adventurous Valentine’s Day wherever you end up.

Don’t let distance give you the Valentine’s Day blues! Instead, find fun and creative ways to spend time with your man, even if you’re miles apart.
