How To Reclaim Your UCSD Experience After Studying Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.

So, after months and months of planning, piles of paperwork, and heaps of anticipation, you’ve finally done it! You’ve studied abroad, and, what’s more, you’ve returned from studying abroad. With a head likely filled with memories of Scottish castles or Asian night markets or Australian beaches, you’ve returned to UCSD’s lovely and familiar turf. Even if you are glad to be home, it’s easy to feel a bit disconnected, even underwhelmed, coming back. After all, what’s lunch at Price Center after delicious South American food? Adjustment can be difficult, in regards to anything from friends to classes, but there are a few easy steps to settle back into and thrive at UCSD once again. Her Campus is here to guide you!

The first thing Her Campus recommends doing once returning home is spending time getting reconnected. This reconnection can mean anything, from setting up a dinner date with gal pals to arranging a special night with your significant other to visiting a favorite professor’s office hours. Spend a little time getting reacquainted with our campus and town, too; head on over to La Jolla Shores or grab a latte at Perks. There are so many reasons to love and admire UCSD! Remind yourself of its little comforts, and spend time reestablishing relationships that mean something to you.

Next, Her Campus suggests getting in touch with other study abroad returnees. The International Center offers many ways to do so, hosting events and gatherings specifically for them. These events often showcase influential guest speakers and provide information about applying your study abroad experience further (not to mention they usually have free food, too!). Making connections with other returnees can be fun and helpful; after all, they know what you’re going through! Reminisce about getting lost on the Tube and getting lost in Warren upon your San Diego homecoming. Your study abroad experience will likely be a highlight of your college years, and it’s important to keep its influence alive. Here at UCSD, you can also volunteer or work at the International Center. Help guide students considering studying abroad towards a life-changing experience like yours!

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, be grateful! As cheesy as it can sound, the saying, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened,” definitely applies here. Remember, it’s okay to feel nostalgia for your host country! Studying abroad is an experience like nothing else, and your time abroad will occupy a large place in your heart. But also know, UCSD is an amazing place to call home. Express gratitude for new friends and old, for great memories, and for time spent both abroad and at this beautiful place, UCSD. You’ll fall right back in step with things, we promise!
