Ceski Goddard

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Andrews chapter.

Name: Ceski Goddard

Year: 3rd year

Hometown: Sussex

Degree: Art History and Management

Ceski Goddard, a third year student studying Art History and Management, is passionate about her subjects – well, art history at least. She admits that art history ‘keeps me sane’ as a contrasting subject to complement her studies of management. Ceski attributes some of this enthusiasm for art history as a consequence by her love for the practical side of art – she has always enjoyed painting. She further discloses her passion for her degree due to the many opportunities it provides for ‘escaping the bubble’, with the frequent trips to the National Gallery in Edinburgh.

Impressively, Ceski is also able to cite her favourite painting – Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio. She expands with a detailed outburst concerning the significance and intricacies of the painting – Ceski points to the realism of the painting, the dramatic imagery with the stark contrast between light and dark and its atmosphere. Caravaggio is her favourite artist, and also recommends that I research The incredulity of Saint Thomas, and again cites the realism and ‘photographic-like’ (technical term) nature of the painting, emphasising the ‘beauty in the detail’.

When not absorbed by her studies, Ceski is heavily involved within Law Society, having had a successful stint at publicity officer this year (their social media presence and ‘likes’ on Facebook have increased enormously) and having the role of treasurer lined up for next year. Again, Ceski’s enthusiasm shines through, ‘Law society is great because, as St Andrews doesn’t offer law as a degree, everyone is genuinely interested in it; people want to get involved and come to events.’ She aspires to become a solicitor in commercial law in the UK, but enjoys the mixed nature of the committee and the widespread aspirations – especially the mix between lawyer/barrister as well as the differences between British and American Law. She cites her favourite event so far as the annual trip to London because of the opportunity it provides to pretend to be a lawyer for the day and enter into mock negotiations. However, she is also greatly looking forward to the 10th year anniversary drinks reception and the chance to meet Donald R. Finlay, a prominent Scottish Q.C. and an ‘eccentric and interesting character.’

Crucially, and the most important question in my eyes, Ceski’s favourite law drama is Season one of Suits (apparently it fizzled out after that) and then definitely House of Cards. If you want to get more involved than simply watching TV, she recommends checking out lawcareers.net, or coming along to any law society events, and get chatting with the committee, or chatting to a barrister with their ‘beer with a barrister events.’ She continues that the law society have a lot to offer – with trips to London and mooting competitions with other universities as particular highlights.

Thoroughly unfazed by the prospect of entering fourth year, Ceski is excited about life after graduation and having spent four years in this town. Nonetheless, her advice for students entering first year is to get involved with as many things as possible, realising that your interests will change and perhaps fizzle out, but have fun before you run out of time. However, she does jokingly admit that she will miss the ‘boys’ and ‘bumping into last night’s hook up in Tesco’….
