Liza Musayelyan, President of Phi Mu Beta Tau

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Drexel chapter.

Sororities are a lot of fun and are enticing for both their philanthropic efforts and their social aspect. What people often forget, however, is that a lot of work goes into planning events, maintaining contact with both Drexel and its Fraternity and Sorority Life office and Phi Mu’s national organization. This is exactly what Liza Musayelyan, the president of Phi Mu, does on a regular basis.

Liza Musayelyan is a pre-junior studying marketing and finance from Mechanicsburg, PA. Liza joined Phi Mu her freshman year, but she said she had no plans to join a sorority before coming to Drexel. The main reason she went out for recruitment was because her roommate did, and Liza was very eager to make new friends. When she found Phi Mu, however, she said she “made a great decision that would be a huge part of [her] collegiate years.”

As the president, she oversees the Phi Mu executive board, maintains contact with Drexel, and the Phi Mu national organization. Liza said, “It’s a lot of time and responsibility, but it’s also very rewarding!” After serving on Phi Mu’s exec board last year, Liza realized she loved being able to improve her chapter of Phi Mu and decided to run for president.

Being the president of a sorority is a lot of work, but it’s also very fun. Liza has a big impact on improving her sisters’ experiences. It also helps that Liza is extremely passionate about Phi Mu and everything it stands for, and lives for the moments where her sisters get something valuable out of their experience in Phi Mu. Being an only child, Liza always dreamed of having a big or little sister, and now she has both!

Being the president isn’t the only thing Liza has on her plate. She also is enjoying her co-op at GlaxoSmithKline and hopes to remain in the pharmaceutical industry after graduation. However, being the president of Phi Mu is a full-time job, and Liza says it’s the first and last thing on her mind every day. She says it’s hard to balance Phi Mu, school, co-op, and other activities, but it’s obvious that Liza is doing a great job.

If Liza wants you to know something about sorority life, it’s this: being in a sorority completely enhances your college experience, from making lifelong friends to preparing young women for leadership roles in the workforce. Sororities do a lot more than host socials—they help each member reach their personal best, by providing tools for academic success and opportunities for community service and philanthropy. Liza also said that sororities create “meaningful friendships and a strong sisterhood that is always supportive of each other.”

Each member of a Phi Mu plays an important part in forming the dynamics and mission of the sorority. But without strong presidents like Liza, who oversees everything and keeps everything together, sororities wouldn’t be as great and offer as many great opportunities as they do.
